HIGHLIGHTS

MAJOR SHOWS:

AUGUST 20

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA: SUPER WELTER: NIKITA TSZYU (11-0) W RTD 1 LUIZIM ISMAILI (12-1). MIDDLE: MICHAEL ZERAFA (34-5) W TKO 1 MIKEY DAHLMAN (18-2). LIGHT: AHMAD REDA (7-0) W PTS 10 BRUNO TARIMO (29-5-2). MIDDLE: BROCK JARVIS (23-2) W TKO 4 SAM BECK (7-1).
Tszyu vs. Ismaili
TSZYU disposes of an overmatched and inept ISMAILI. Tszyu drove a straight left through the Macedonian’s guard half way through the first round that sent Ismaili down. Another left to the head floored Ismaili thirty seconds later. A left to the body just before the bell seemed to hurt Ismaili and he did not come out for the second claiming a rib injury. First fight for almost a year for Tszyu as he recovers from an injury to his left hand and he wins the vacant WBO Inter-Continental title. Ismaili just a 6 and 8 round prelim fighter and out of his depth and rated No 365 by BoxRec.
Zerafa vs. Dahlman
Another waste of ring space sees ZERAFA destroy American DAHLMAN. Zerafa buckled Dahlman’s knees with a right in the first 30 seconds. He connected with a couple more rights and then overbalanced as they came together and slipped down. The referee decided it was from a punch and gave a strongly protesting Zerafa a count. Zerafa then forced Dahlman to the ropes and into a corner and unloaded punches until the referee stepped in. Dahlman had hardly thrown a punch and it was all over in 122 seconds. Pitiful. Zerafa was defending the WBO Inter-Continental title and has never had an easier fight. There is now talk of Tszyu vs. Zerafa which would be a good match. Dahlman had a heavily padded record against third rate opposition
Reda vs. Tarimo
Prospect REDA collects the vacant Australian title with a unanimous decision over TARIMO. Despite the wide scores this was the best fight of the night. Reda had never gone past five rounds before but he stood the pace well against the tough Tarimo. Although a lightweight he had to agree to a catchweight of 132 lbs for the fight and won on scores of 99-91, 98-92 and 97-93. Reda 22 was an Elite level amateur. Tanzanian-born Tarimo had scored good wins against Nathaniel May and Kye Mackenzie
Jarvis vs. Beck
JARVIS stops BECK in the fourth. Both had some success over the first two round but Jarvis seemed to be taking control in the third. He was forcing Beck back with hooks from both hands and strong jabs. A pair of head shots dropped Beck in the fourth. He made it to his feet but looked unsteady and the referee stopped the fight. Jarvis weighed 115 at the start of his career but was 156 ½” for this fight. His losses have come against Laim Paro and in March against Keith Thurman. New Zealander Beck just lacked the experience to match Jarvis.

AUGUST 21

CASAS GRANDES, MEXICO : FEATHER: RENE PALACIOS (18-0-1) W TKO 3 RAFAEL RAMIREZ (20-9-2).
PALACIOS stops RAMIREZ in the third. After a close first round in the second jabbing from Palacios had blood coming from a cut over Ramirez’s left eye and the bridge of his nose. In the third a right stunned Ramirez and Palacios took him to the ropes and was unloading punches when the referee stopped the fight. Seventh win in a row for local fighter Palacios. Ramirez falls to 1-8 in his last 9 fights.

ORLANDO, FL, USA: SUPER WELTER: YOELVIS GOMEZ (9-1) W PTS 10 EDWINE HUMAINE Jr (9-2). FEATHER: JAN PAUL RIVERA (13-0) W TKO 6 DANIEL BAILEY (15-3). LIGHT: COREY MARKSMAN (12-0-1) W TKO 7 LUIS MARTINEZ (9-2). SUPER FEATHER: JAHMAL HARVEY (1-0) W RTD 1 MARCELLO DEL AGUILA (5-2).
Gomez vs. Humaine
GOMEZ needs a big finish over the last three rounds to get a majority decision mover HUMAINE.
Southpaw Gomez went ahead early taking the fight to Humaine and landing some hard shots and looked to have taken the first three rounds. if there was a concern it was that he was leaving himself open to counters. Humaine took advantage of that and wobbled Gomez with a right in the fourth and Gomez slowed in the fifth as they traded with Gomez head hunting and Humaine scoring to the body. Humaine seemed to get the better of the exchanges in the sixth and outworked Gomez in the seventh. The fight was slipping away from Gomez but he upped his pace over the last three rounds rocking Humaine with a left at the end of the eighth and again at the end of the ninth and did enough to win the tenth. Scores 97-93 and 96-94 for Gomez and 95-95. Third consecutive victory for Cuban Gomez as he gets back on track after losing a wide decision against Marquis Taylor in 2023. Haitian Humaine lost his unbeaten tag with a defeat on points against 16-0 Ardreal Holms Jr in December
Rivera vs. Bailey
RIVERA scores two knockdowns on the way to a sixth round victory over BAILEY. Rivera made a good start dropping Bailey with a counter left hook in the first. Bailey had been boxing skilfully in the using his edges in height and reach and he took the second with some accurate counter punching. Rivera increased the pressure over the third and fourth and edged both rounds but Bailey connected with enough to be very much still in the fight. Rivera dominated the fifth as Bailey slowed and came apart. In the sixth Rivera drove Bailey around the ring before flooring him with a right. Bailey only just beat the count and Rivera pinned him in a corner and pounded him with punches and the referee came in to save Bailey. Puerto Rican Rivera, 24, was in his first fight scheduled for ten rounds. Bailey had won 5 of his last 6 fights.
Markson vs. Martinez
MARKSMAN wears down and halts MARTINEZ in seven rounds. Marksman outscored Martinez in the first and dominated from there. His better skills and faster hands were too much for Martinez to deal with and he had to soak up punishment in round after round. A series of punches shook Martinez in the seventh and the fight was stopped. Ninth inside the distance victory for 24-year-old Floridian Markson. Martinez had won his last three matches.
Harvey vs. Del Aguila
US Olympian HARVEY beats Peruvian DEL AGUILA on a first round retirement. It was an impressive display from Harvey as he effortlessly switched guards and connected with hard shots to head and body and Del Aguila retired in his corner at the end of the round. The 22-year-old from Maryland was eliminated in the quarterfinals in Paris losing to the eventual silver medallist but was a US Youth and US National champion and won a gold medal at the Pan American Games. Del Aguila is 0-2 in fights in the USA.

DETROIT, MI, USA: LIGHT: CHAN THONSON (18-1) W TKO 4 FRANKIE SANCHEZ JR (7-3-2).
Canadian THONSON batters SANCHEZ to defeat in four rounds. After dominating the action Thonson exploded in the fourth blasting Sanchez with hooks to head and body until Sanches dropped to the canvas ending the fight. Second inside the distance win for Thonson since losing on a tenth round kayo against Ruben Neri for the vacant WBA Gold title in Buenos Aires in August last year. Second KO/TKO loss for Sanchez

AUGUST 23

RAFAEL CALZADA, ARGENTINA: SUPER LIGHT: JEREMIAS PONCE (34-1) W PTS 8 ALEXIS TORRES (13-13-1).
PONCE floors and outpoints TORRES. Ponce used his height and reach to control the fight over the first round and then floored southpaw Torres with a right in the second. Ponce found Torres a difficult target at times and stuck to a left jab/straight right/left hook approach. Torres attack only in bursts but put in a big effort in the eighth which might have won him the round. Scorers 80-71 twice and 79-72. Ponce lost on a fifth round retirement against Subriel Matias for the vacant IBF title in 2023 and has scored four wins since then including two over Torres. Just one win in his last ten fights for Torres.

BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA: LIGHT: JAKE WYLLIE (18-2,1ND) W PTS 10 YOUSEFF DIB (21-4). SUPER BANTAM: SKYE NICOLSON (14-1) W KO 2 URVASHI SINGH (12-4).
Wyllie vs. Dib
WYLLIE takes a unanimous decision over DIB. Although the fight was a bit scrappy at times it provided plenty of entertainment. Wyllie played the aggressor with the more skilled Dib initially jabbing and countering well. Wyllie’s constant pressure and effective body punching gave him the edge and he generally outworked Dib. Wyllie was the harder puncher but the more accurate punching came from Dib and he landed some good right hand counters. They both forgot their boxing at times and it got rough in patches with Wyllie benefitting from that. Wyllie’s body punching slowed Dib and his constant pressure was winning him rounds but he had to fight hard all the way for his win. Scores 98-92 twice and 97-74 for Wyllie who wins the vacant IBF Australasian belt. He had lost to George Kambosos Jr in March so this was an effective rebound from that defeat. Dib lost back-to-back fights against Liam Paro so this is his third defeat in a row.
Nicolson vs. Singh
Too easy for NICOLSON as she beats India’s SINGH in two rounds. Nicolson was on the target from the first bell. She easily pierced Singh’s defence with her right jab and connected with straight lefts. In the second a left to the body had Singh hurt and she turned away; The referee had not said to stop boxing so Nicolson connected with a couple of punches and Singh dropped to her knees. The referee counted but Singh was shaking her head and made no attempt to get up. Former WBC featherweight champion Nicolson was moving down from featherweight and wins the vacant IBF Inter-Continental title. Singh did not have the power to compete.

BRAKPAN, SOUTH AFRICA: HEAVY: CHRIS THOMPSON (16-6-1) W TKO 7 SHAUN POTGIETER (10-3).
THOMPSON stops POTGIETER in the seventh and regains the South African title. Potgieter had Thompson badly shaken in the third but failed to take full advantage of that and paid the price. Thompson battled his way back into the fight and wore down Potgieter. Southpaw Thompson was on top in the seventh and Potgieter tried to take refuge on the ropes but as Thompson pounded him with punches he turned his back and the fight was stopped. Thompson had lost the title in his first defence against Keaton Gomes in 2022 but has won his last four fights. Potgieter was himself making his first defence of the title.

TABORA, TANZANIA: SUPER LIGHT: ABDUL ZUGO (16-1-2) W KO 3 SAMEER KUMAR (6-5).
Much too easy for ZUGO as stops KUMAR in the third round. This really was farcical. Zugo had huge edges in height and reach. He was able to catch Kumar easily with his jab and dropped Kumar with a right in the first. Kumar just hid behind a high guard and bounced forward then back without throwing a single punch in the round. Zugo continued to connect with his jab in the second and third and Kumar never threw punch in anger before just turning away and walking to his corner where the referee counted him out. Zugo wins the WBFederation Continental title.

ALTRINCHAM, ENGLAND: SUPER LIGHT: JACK RAFFERTY (26-0-1) DREW 12 MARK CHAMBERLAIN (17-1-0). FEATHER: ZAK MILLER (17-1) W PTS 12 LEON WOODSTOCK (16-5). SUPER FLY: JACK TURNER (12-0) W TKO 6 NICOLAS MUGURUZA (11-1). MIDDLE: LEWIS RICHARDSON (2-0) W PTS 6 ARTJOM SPATAR (5-17-1). SUPER FEATHER: NELSON BIRCHALL 9-0) W KO 1 FEDERICO PEDRAZA 14-5-1). Light: STEVEN CAIRNS (12-0) W TKO 5 KIRK STEVENS (7-5-1). FEATHER: CHARLIE SENIOR (2-0) W PTS 6 DARWING MARTINEZ (8-35-2). WELTER: HENRY TURNER (15-1) W TKO 3 IVAN BLAZEVIC (8-2).
Rafferty vs. Chamberlain
RAFFERTY and CHAMBERLAIN fight to a majority draw in an exciting clash. Chamberlain took the first round. He was circling the ring firing long right jabs really letting his hands go and a left to the head stopped Rafferty in his tracks. Rafferty paid Chamberlain back in the second landing a neck snapping right but Chamberlain was effective with one two’s fired off the back foot. Rafferty was doing a better job of cutting down the ring in the third and Chamberlain was cut over his left eye. In the fourth Chamberlain was constantly circling the ring stopping now and then to fire straight counters. Many were being blocked but Chamberlain was also cut under his left eye and Rafferty was having more success. Rafferty was taking that extra pace forward in the fifth and putting Chamberlain under relentless pressure and landing heavily to the body. Chamberlain was still landing counters but being outscored. There were some fierce exchanges in the sixth and seventh with Rafferty landing the better shots and again focusing on the body and Chamberlain looking to be slowing. Rafferty continued his pressure tactics in the eighth. He was leaving himself open when in range and Chamberlain was able to land some hefty counters but Rafferty’s pressure and body punching gave him the ninth. Chamberlain landed two heavy lefts in the tenth and he was throwing more and finding plenty of gaps in Rafferty’s defence. Chamberlain built on that in the eleventh as Rafferty was leaving himself open as he drove forward Chamberlain was landing lefts and rights to the head and just pumping out punches. Chamberlain was moving and picking Rafferty off at distance in the twelfth. Rafferty was piling forward throwing punches but Chamberlain’s accuracy gave him the edge. Scores 114-114 twice and 115-114 to Chamberlain making it a majority draw allowing Rafferty to retain both the British and Commonwealth belts. It had been a great scrap of contrasting styles and fought at a fast pace. The best fight of the night and a return would be welcomed.
Miller vs. Woodstock
MILLER defends the Commonwealth title with a points victory over WOODSTOCK. The fight started badly for Woodstock as he suffered a cut over his right in the first round but he shook that off and had a good opener. As the fight progressed from there it was Miller’s skill and speed that dominated. He outworked Woodstock using fast, accurate jabs and powerful rights. Woodstock tried to put Miller under pressure but Miller was able to dance away from Woodstock attacks and feed him right counters. Miller upped the pace over the middle rounds. Woodstock fought hard to pick up a couple of rounds but his surges were complicated by cuts suffered in head clashes and he never really threatened to spring an upset as Miller boxed his way to the decision on scores of 117-112 twice and 117-111. First defence of the Commonwealth title for Miller. He lost a majority decision against Nathaniel Colling in a challenge for the British and Commonwealth titles in 2023. Woodstock has travelled a hard road with losses against Zelfa Barrett and Anthony Cacace.
Turner vs. Muguruza
TURNER scores a sixth round victory over Argentinian MUGURUZA. With eight first round wins Turner might have been looking to get some rounds in and he made an uncharacteristically restrained start to this fight boxing on the back foot in the first looking to counter. Muguruza did some useful jabbing and Turner opened up late in the round connecting with some left hooks. It was phone-booth fighting in the second and third as Muguruza walked forward behind a high guard going toe-to-toe with Turner and putting Turnure under constant pressure. Turner just could not keep him out and was twice warned for low punches. Turner upped his game in the fourth and fifth not allowing himself to be forced back and increasing his punch output. Muguruza was the one under pressure but despite a heavy nose bleed he still showed plenty of fire. A left hook from Turner dropped Muguruza in the sixth. He made it to his feet but after the count a ferocious attack by Turnure, including another left hook sent Muguruza down again. He got up but after the two hard knockdowns and with blood pouring from his nose the referee made a good stoppage decision. Sixth inside the distance win in a row for Turner who was defending the WBA International title but was given a much harder test than expected against Muguruza who BoxRec have as No 79 .
Richardson vs. Spatar
No real problems for RICHARDSON as he boxes his way to a points win over Estonian SPATAR. The tall southpaw was able to pierce Spatar’s guard with his right jabs and found gaps for his left hooks. Spatar was too slow to pose any threat and offered very little in nthe way of offence. There were no real highlights as Richardson cruised to victory but without ever having Spatar in any trouble. The referee scored it 60-54. Richardson lost to Mexican Marco Verde in the semi-finals in Paris. He is a stylish boxer but lack of power may be drawback as a professional. Only one win in his last 14 fights for Spatar.
Birchall vs. Pedraza
BIRCHALL demolishes fellow-southpaw  PEDRAZA in a round.Pedraza immediately set off on a circumnavigation of the ring with Birchall shadowing him looking to cut off the ring. He trapped Pedraza against the ropes and connected with some hooks to the body. Pedraza slipped away pawing with a few jabs and Birchall stepped in with a series of lefts and right hooks and a right uppercut floored Pedraza who made no attempt to beat the count. Sixth win by KO/TKO for 23-year-old Birchall a World Youth bronze medal winner. Third inside the distance defeat in a row for Pedraza.
Cairns vs. Stevens
Cairns stops a brave Stevens in the fifth CAIRNS used his faster hands and better skills to dominate this one. Southpaw STEVENS tried to get on the front foot but when he did strong jabbing and rights had him backing off. Stevens made an aggressive start to the second and third rounds coming forward firing punches staying busy and not giving Cairns any punching room. He lacked power but his work rate was keeping Cairns under pressure. Cairns came to life in the fourth rocking Stevens with a right to the head and later swung him to the canvas and the referee applied a count. Stevens again took the fight to Cairns but was caught by a hard combination before the bell. In the fifth two body punches had Stevens stepping back and then dropping to his knees. He was up at eight but was knocked down again and the referee halted the fight. Now eight wins by KO/TKO for Ireland’s Cairns. He just punched too hard for Stevens.
Senior vs. Martinez
Just six rounds of work for SENIOR as he outpoints Nicaraguan MARTINEZ. No real highlights. Senior was too quick and won every round. He switched guards and was equally as effective with either stance. Martinez never threatened he just circled the ring making the occasional foray into the middle of the ring and fired some hopeful counters but was too slow to catch Senior. The referee scored it 60-54. English-born AustralianSenior won a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics. Spanish-based Martinez has lost his last 11 fights on points.
TURNER
TURNER disposes of BLAZEVIC inside three rounds. Turner was stalking Blazevic from the start looking to pin the Bosnian against the ropes and land his southpaw lefts. He had some success but Blazevic just circled the ring occasionally throwing wild swipes and looking to avoid trouble. Turner pressed harder in the second and connected with some right and left hooks with Blazevic still just looking to survive. A left to the body sent Blazevic down at the start of the third. He only just made it to his feet at nine but quickly went down from a couple of light punches and when he climbed to his feet at eight the referee just waived the fight over. Turner’s loss came on a ninth round retirement against Jack Rafferty for the British and Commonwealth titles in October.

ORLANDO, FL , USA: SUPER WELTER: ABASS BARAOU (17-1) W PTS 12 YOENIS TELLEZ (10-0). FLY: YANKIEL RIVERA (7-0-1) DREW 12 ANGELINO CORDOVA (19-0-2).LIGHT: LUCAS BAHDI (20-0) W PTS 12 ROGER GUTIERREZ (29-7-1). SUPER LIGHT: JAMAINE ORTIZ (20-2-2) W TKO 3 AMBIORIX BAUTISTA (19-3). LIGHT: STEPHANIE HAN (11-0) W PTS 10 PAULINA ANGEL (7-2-2). SUPER FLY JASMINE ARTIGA (14-0-1) W TKO 3 LINN SANDSTROM (10-4-3).
Baraou vs. Tellez
BARAOU wins the vacant WBA interim title as he floors and outpoints favourite TELLEZ.
Baraou quickly took control as he came fortward firing jabs though Tellez’s guard and connecting with body punches. Southpaw Tellez had a better second as he jabbed strongly and found the target with uppercuts and did enough to win the round despite a late attack from Baraou. The third and fourth saw Baraou step up the pressure forging forward putting Tellez against the ropes and landing to head and body. Tellez went on the front foot in the fifth landing some sharp combinations. Pressure from Baraou was closing down Tellez’s attacks but he ended the round strongly and again had some success with uppercuts but just could not keep Baraou out. The sixth and seventh saw Baraou swarming all over Tellez taking him to the ropes landing hooks and uppercuts inside with very little coming back from Tellez. The fight was getting away from Tellez and Baraou just seemed to get stronger and stronger. Tellez landed some combinations at the start of the eighth but then Baraou took over again forcing Tellez to the ropes and he rocked Tellez with a left hook. Tellez stood and traded punches in the ninth and both landed well to the body. Tellez again stood and exchanged shots at the start of the tenth. Baraou seemed to have slowed and Tellez was scoring with hooks and uppercuts and putting together some impressive combinations but was running out of rounds. It had been a high-paced fight and both fighters looked to be tired in the eleventh but Tellez was fighting with desperation as he must have known he was behind and once again he was firing hooks and uppercuts landing heavily to the body and won the round. Any chance Telez had of winning disappeared in the last few seconds of the fight. Baraou’s pressure had him on the way to winning the round and just before the final bell he pinned Tellez against the ropes and connected with three left hooks that had Tellez staggering along the ropes and down. Tellez got up and the bell went just as the eight count was completed. Scores 117-110, 116-111 and 115-112 for Baraou. This was Baraou’s first fight for 14 months but he showed no rust. WBO champion Xander Zayas was in attendance and that would make a good title fight. Tellez had scored wins over Sergio Garcia, Johan Gonzalez and Julian Williams but will have to rebuild and await another title chance.
Rivera vs. Cordova
RIVERA and CORDOVA end all square in a nasty, messy fight for the vacant WBA interim title. In what was a sign of things to come Cordova started the fight by throwing and missing with some wild punches and was warned for punches to the back of the head. He was hustling Rivera and just did enough work to edge the round. The second saw a clash of heads and more punches to the back of the head from Cordova and what clean work there was came from Rivera. He looked to be getting into his stride in the third working his jab and landing well inside. Cordova took the fight to Rivera in the fourth and a clash of heads opened a cut over Rivera’s left eye. Rivera then shook Cordova with a left and a hurt Cordova wrestled Rivera to the floor. Rivera responded by getting up and throwing Cordova to the floor. The referee decided it was a knockdown and gave Cordova a count. A mistake which in the end cost Cordoiva the fight. After the fourth Rivera was up 38-37 on two cards and 39-36 on the third. Cordova rebounded in the fifth roughing up Rivera inside and then rocking Rivera with a left. Cordova wasted his effort in the sixth by losing a point for more punches to the back of the head. There was a head clash again in the seventh but Rivera found space to box and he landed some good counters. Rivera continued to do some good work in the eighth but Cordova was finding the target with left hooks and probably just took a close round. Despite the knockdown and the point deduction against Cordova it was still close with River ahead 77-73 and 76-74 on two cards and one card at 75-75. Cordova seemed the fresher and he staged a strong finish with work inside in the ninth and tenth and landed three rights at the end of the eleventh that had Rivera reeling and stumbling. Cordova outscored a tired Rivera in the last to make it a very close fight. Scores 113-113 twice and 115-111 for Cordova. The WBA interim title remains vacant and this was such a messy fight there is not much support for a return.
Bahdi vs. Gutierrez
Canadian BAHDI floors and outpoints GUTIERREZ and moves closer to a title shot. Bahdi made a fast start slotting jabs through the guard of former WBA super featherweight champion Gutierrez and was the more active fighter corralling the first three rounds. The fourth was close as Gutierrez upped his output but Bahdi landed a heavy right to the head and was still finding the target with his jabs. The pace slowed in fifth with Gutierrez finally having some success and taking a close round. He used his jab more and was dangerous with rights. Gutierrez was looking to build on that success in the sixth but found himself on the floor. As he came forward Bahdi took a step to the side and connected with a hard right over Gutierrez’s low hanging left. Gutierrez bounced up but it was a 10-8 round for Bahdi extending his lead. Fired up by the knockdown Bahdi piled on the pressure in the seventh, eighth and ninth targeting Gutierrez’s body and connecting with rights to the head. Gutierrez had a better tenth as Bahdi’s output dropped and Gutierrez was getting through with rights and outworked Bahdi in the eleventh but needed a knockout. Gutierrez did enough to edge the last but Bahdi was never in trouble. Bahdi wins on scores of 117-110, 116-111 and 115-112. With talk of the WBA declaring their title vacant if Gervonta Davis fights Jake Paul then Bahdi, rated No 5 before this fight, is hoping he will be in the mix for a shot at the vacant title. Venezuelan Gutierrez still has some good fight left in him but will struggle to get a title shot.
Ortiz vs. Bautista
ORTIZ floors BAUTISTA twice on the way to a third round stoppage. Plenty of clever movement from Ortiz in the first as he circled Bautista using his quicker hand speed and stance switching to thread jabs through the guard of the static Bautista. Ortiz came off his toes and drove Bautista to a corner and fired an array of punches. Ortiz had Bautista retreating around the ring in the second scoring with some leaping left hooks. He blocked counters from Bautista and then drove forward throwing punches with Bautista made to hold and Bautista was under pressure again at the bell. Bautista could not keep Ortiz out in the third. Ortiz was getting past Bautista’s weak jab and landing quick combinations. As Ortiz unleashed a barrage of punches Bautista’s left leg seemed to buckle under him and he went down. Her was up quickly but after the count he backed away under Ortiz’s attack and dropped to one knee and the referee waived the fight over. Ortiz’s two defeats have come in fights against Vasyl Lomachenko and in a challenge for the WBO super light title against Teofimo Lopez. He has scored three wins against creditable opposition since the Lopez defeat. Dominican Bautista had a 16-bout unbeaten streak going into this fight.
Han vs. Angel
HAN successfully defends her WBA title with a unanimous decision over ANGEL. There was a sensational start with Angel flooring Han with a right in the first 25 seconds of the fight. Han was not too badly shaken and she ended the round strongly and outboxed Angel in the second. The third was close but Hann suffered a bad cut on her forehead in the fourth. Han settled from the fifth. She outboxed Angel and was the busier fighter taking control and never relinquishing it but Angel kept trying to take the fight to Han to the end. Scores 98-91 for Han on all three cards and there is talk of a defence against Holly Holm. Colombian Angel just found Han too big a step up from her other opposition.
Artiga vs. Sandstrom
Artiga was forging forward behind her jab in the first and firing rights putting Sandstrom on the back foot and too busy defending to counter effectively. Artiga was also switching guards which was just another problem for Sandstrom. Artiga continued to chase Sandstrom in the second landing to head and body. Sandstrom threw counters but Artiga just kept coming pinning Sandstrom against the ropes and bombarding her with punches. Sandstrom tried to hold her ground in the third but the harder punches from Artiga had her backing off to the ropes where Artiga trapped her and unleashed a burst of punches that saw the referee come in to save Sandstrom. Local fighter Artiga was making the first defence of the WBA title. Brazilian-born Australian Sandstrom was having her second shot at this title but was outclassed.

MIAMI, FL. USA: HEAVY MURAT GASSIEV (32-2) W RTD 6 JEREMIAH MILTON (11-2).
GASSIEV beats MILTON on a sixth round retirement. The fight was slow-paced with Gassiev marching forward with Milton using his longer reach to fire jabs and straight rights but without any significant power. Although the pace was slow by the end of the fifth Milton was gassed and Gassiev was starting to get to him with overhand rights. Gassiev landed some hard body hooks in the sixth and Milton did not come out for the seventh. Second victory for Gassiev since losing a split decision in 2023 against Otto Wallin. First loss by KO/TKO for Milton.

LAGOS, NIGERIA: HEAVY: IKE IBEABUCHI (21-0) W TKO 3 IDRIS AFINNI (18-9-2).
IBEABUCHI beats fellow-Nigerian AFFINI on a third round retirement. Body punches put paid to Affini and he did not come out for the fourth round. The 52-year-old Ibeabuchi was in his first fight since beating Chris Byrd in March 1999. Affini had won 3 of his 4 fights this year. Ibeabuchi promptly called out Oleksandr Usyk. Perhaps he should have called out Jake Paul instead.
