LUMACAD LOOKING FORWARD TO A BIG WIN AGAINST ARCE PhilBoxing.com Mon, 22 Jun 2009 The story of growing up in General Santos City?has already been told for the entire world to hear and see. Having heard and seen it one can already understand Fernando Lumacad's quiet intensity. This unknown General Santos city?fighter's childhood and growing up was not unlike his famous neighbor boxing great Manny Paquiao's. Fernando Lumacad of course grew up poor like most every kid?did in the Philippine city of General?Santos. But, what?Lumacad's religious parents?do lack in material goods they made up for?with love and discipline for their?10 children. Fernando started studying early and?while learning to box, he improved very quickly. He eventually became a star member of the # 1 amateur boxing team in the Philippines [as an amateur Lumacad had a record of 140 wins-5 losses, and won every national tourney he entered]. Fernando, the fifth child of Danielita and Fernando Sr., was raised in a religious family where the work ethic was strong but work was frequently unavailable. Eventually Fernando was forced to stop school,?turning to professional boxing at 20 years old to support his family. Lumacad's professional foray was no disappointment. At the tender age of 21 and with only 1 1/2?years of professional boxing, he accumulated a perfect 12-0 record before traveling to Bangkok, Thailand to face former WBC world champion Wandee Singwancha. The fight was scored close but?won unanimously by the former Thai world champion. Some reports coming from people who saw the fight indicated that Lumacad didn't lost even a single round in the contest. After the disappointment in Thailand, Lumacad changed management and moved to the Ken Smith owned American Boxing Academy in another city outside of his family's?home in?General Santos. Lumacad was paired with American trainer Norman Wilson for a year, before eventually settling in with Filipino trainer Lilios "Yoki" Siodena. Since then Lumacad has been unbeaten and now, thanks to his new management and his promoter Sammy Gello-ani of?Cebu in the?Philippines, Lumacad has the opportunity every fighter dreams of by "fighting a legend in a big stage in?America."? Lumacad, although clearly less experienced than the former multi-division world champion Jorge Arce of Mexico who will be his opponent this Saturday in Atlantic City (Sunday in Manila), does not really view himself as a underdog says Lumacad's manager American Ken Smith. "Fernando is a winner. He is used to winning and he expects to win always. That is just how this kid is wired, even though Fernando certainly realizes what this fight means?for him and his family, Fernando just looks at it as he does?any other fight. He expects to win." Lumacad who recently left Los Angeles in the USA?where he trained for a week at?the famous Wild Card Gym of Freddie Roach, is now in Seattle Washington finishing his training at former world lightweight contender Bret Summers gym. Team Lumacad will depart Washington State where they will be met?in New?York by?promoter Sammy Gello-ani on Tuesday, June 23. The fighter and his team will then be?moving onto Atlantic City for the WBA International Super-Flyweight title fight against Arce?Saturday night at Caesar's Boardwalk.??
