FOR A TIME SUCH AS THIS By Atty. Dan Neri Lim PhilBoxing.com Mon, 15 Jun 2009 There is no doubt that Manny Pacquiao is the man of the hour for the Philippines. Although this one was a little more than an affirmation, his second consecutive ?Fighter of the Year? award from the Boxing Writers Association of America which he received Friday night proved this point. Manny Pacquiao is the best active pound-for-pound boxer in the world today. This elevates him above Gabriel ?Flash? Elorde and Pancho Villa in the rolls of boxing legends to a people where boxing is more than just a sport. In a country in search of heroes, the best thing that can happen is Manny Pacquiao?s march to immortality. He has made his mark not only as a fighter of immense talent to go with his oversized fighting heart, Manny has also delivered a strong message that can serve the country in good stead in a time such as this. He has proven that good guys still finish first. We live in a time of quick fixes and short cuts, when putting one over others has become a virtue instead of a vice. Laws and rules are slowly blurred, honored more in the breach by those who think that power and privilege are rewards that carry immunity for those who wear them. Manny however is showing us all that virtues and honor defy time. They apply whether man lives BC or AD. He has shown that the time-honored chemistry of hard work, dedication and determination is not a thing of the past. Pretenders come and go. They may shine like stars overnight but wilt at the first streaks of sunlight. There are those who excel inside the ring, collecting belts and trophies like they were picking flowers by the roadside. And yet, they are good only as the next best version comes along. As soon as they fade from the limelight, their glory days go with them. For all his explosive exploits inside the ring, Manny is more than just brawn and boxing talent. He has character written all over him. He shows us how to be humble each time he emerges triumphant inside the ring. He also taught us how to carry on with dignity in the few times that he came up short. This is what the country ? and the world - needs most at this time. We need a success story to reassure us that the road to success requires patience and humility as much as it demands firm resolve and an indomitable spirit. We need a hero who proves time and again that taking the high road is a way of life that must be lived even when no one is looking around and not only when the cameras are flashing. Over and above that, we need a reassuring life of one who never ceases to give credit to God for all that he has accomplished. In a time when many people equate faith with superstition, when many mock God to raise their chairs higher, Manny makes it a point to give credit where credit is due. These are the worst of times, but this is also the best of times. God created Manny Pacquiao for a time such as this. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Atty. Dan Neri Lim. |
