Joan Tipon.
The Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines is sending six Filipino fighters, led by Asian Games gold medalist Joan Tipon, to the 31st staging of the King?s Cup set April 3-10 in Bangkok, Thailand.
The top-caliber tournament draws some of the best amateur boxers in the world, and ABAP, headed by telecommunications tycoon Manny V. Pangilinan and Ricky Vargas, is pinning its hopes this year on bantamweight Tipon (54 kg.), light flyweight Gerson Nietes (54 kg.), flyweight Aston Francis Palicte (51 kg.), featherweight Charly Suarez (57 kg.), lightweight Joegen Ladon (60 kg.), and light welterweight Genebert Basadre (64 kg.).
The latest word from Thai organizers is that at least 20 countries have confirmed their participation in the traditionally prestigious event.
Tipon crowned himself champion during the 2008 Doha Asian Games, while Nietes, a nephew of world title holder Donnie Nietes, along with Palicte and Suarez are World Championship veterans.
Ladon salvaged the gold medal in the China Asian Boxing Championship, and Basadre reached the semifinals of the Doha Games.
Joining them are coaches Ronald Chavez and Cuban Dagoberto Rojas Scott and International Referee/Judge Dante de Castro and Jesus San Esteban.
ABAP executive director Ed Picson, who heads the RP delegation, points out that three of the six boxers are under 21 years old (Nietes, Palicte and Suarez), an indication of the new ABAP's direction towards "giving adequate exposure to our young boxers without necessarily giving up the advantage of having grizzled veterans."
