Mascarinas faces tough competition in 66th San Carlos Charter Day By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Tue, 09 Jun 2026 International Master Rico Mascarinas of Tuburan, Cebu, FIDE Master Mario Mangubat of Minglanilla, Cebu and National Master Cyril Ortega of Mandaue City expect rough sailing in the Open Rapid Chess Tournament where they will be meeting a tough line of competitors on June 20-21, 2026 at the Marina Park, San Carlos City, Negros Occidental. The two day rapid chess event, backed by San Carlos City Mayor Renato Y. Gustilo, offers P56,000 to the champion. It will coincide with the 66th San Carlos Charter Day celebration. "It will be a very tough match against some of the country's woodpushers," said Mascarinas, who will represent the country in the Seniors Division of the 24th ASEAN+Age Group Chess Championship to be held on August 7-17,2026 at Our Tampines Hub in Singapore. Other notable players vying for the top prize are NM Edwin Tan of Victorias City, NM Alfred Acaling III of Cadiz City, NM Edsel Montoya of La Carlota City, Ian Cris Udani of Bacolod City, Jordaine Tupaz of Talisay City, Theseus Benitez of La Carlota City , Kevin Arquero of Pasay City and Randy Cabuncal of Cebu City.
