Filipino FIDE Master Roel Abelgas finishes second in Hongkong rapid chess By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Sun, 03 Aug 2025 Final Standings: (Top Ten) 8.5 points---FIDE Master Khishigbat Ulziikhishig of Mongolia 8.0 points---FIDE Master Roel Abelgas of the Philippines 8.0 points---FIDE Master Alekhine Nouri of the Philippines 7.5 points---Recarte Tiauson of the Philippines, Mikhail Khmelev of Russia, Peilin Ye of China 7.0 points---FIDE Master Christian Mark Daluz of the Philippines, Jan Clifford of the Philippines, FIDE Master Ganbat Tenguundalai of Mongolia, Tuli Utkrisht of India Hongkong---Filipino FIDE Master Roel Abelgas finished in second place at the Asian Amateur Chess Championships here. The Dasmarinas pride Abelgas had eight wins and one loss at the end of the rapid competition Saturday, August 2, 2025. He and compatriot FIDE Master Alekhine Nouri had identical 8.0 points scores but Abelgas had a better quotient. Abelgas defeated Vihaan Bedadam of Hongkong, Yuxiang Zhou of Hongkong, Jiahong Li of China, FIDE Master In Hei Henry Ho of Hongkong, Sachdev Vivaan of India, Irwin Aton of the Philippines, Djon Carlos Francis Courtes of the Philippines and FIDE Master Christian Mark Daluz of the Philippines. He was beaten by the eventual champion FIDE Master Khishigbat Ulziikhishig of Mongolia in their penultimate round matches. Ulziikhishig drew with Recarte Tiauson of the Philippines in the last round to clinch the title who notched 8.5 points. "I am very happy with the results. Unfortunately kinulang kaya second lang below FM Khishigbat Ulziikhishig of Mongolia pero overall maganda ang naging performance ko," said Abelgas, whose local and international chess campaign is supported by Mayor Jenny Barzaga. In the blitz event, Abelgas finished 21st place which was won by Nouri. The Standard competition gets underway on Sunday, August 3, 2025. Meanwhile, Woman FIDE Master Bristy Mukherjee of India won the title with a perfect score of nine points. Woman FIDE Master Allanea Jia Doroy of the Philippines settled for solo second place with 7.5 points.
