TWO-TIME OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST CLARESSA SHIELDS SUCCESSFULLY DEFENDS HER UNDISPUTED HEAVYWEIGHT CROWN

PhilBoxing.com

SCORES A COMMANDING UNANIMOUS DECISION OVER LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION LANI DANIELS IN DETROIT

DETROIT – July 27, 2025 – The most decorated female boxer in history, Claressa Shields (17-0, 3 KOs), made a triumphant return home and successfully defended her undisputed heavyweight title for the initial time by thoroughly dominating IBF Light Heavyweight World Champion Lani Daniels (11-3, 1 KO) over the course of 10 rounds on Saturday at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit and live on DAZN.

The GWOAT, who made headlines earlier this year by becoming the first woman ever to claim the Undisputed Heavyweight World Championship and the first boxer, male or female, to achieve undisputed status in three divisions, established her supremacy from the opening bell en route to a unanimous decision triumph (100-90 and 99-91 twice) over Daniels of New Zealand.

Shields repeatedly backed her opponent against the ropes in the latter part of the early rounds and unleashed a flurry of punishing and unanswered combinations. Daniels, who spent the first two rounds content on escaping the GWOAT’s power, found her footing later in the championship bout before falling short for the third time in her career.

The highly anticipated co-main event saw the long-awaited triumphant return of Michigan’s own former world champion Tony Harrison (30-4-1, 21 KOs). The Detroit native, who entered the ring for the first time in 26 months, showed no ill effects of the layoff by scoring repeatedly with a dominating left jab to the head of opponent Edward Diaz (15-7, 12 KOs).

However, late in the ninth round, Diaz of the Dominican Republic, followed a left to Harrison’s head with a devastating right hook that dropped a stunned Harrison. Following a 10th and final round that featured the two warriors going toe-to-toe and firing everything they had left in the tank, Harrison walked away with a hard-fought unanimous decision (98-91, 97-92, and 93-93).

Following Worthington-Piteau, Brooklyn, N.Y.’s surging heavyweight prospect Pryce Taylor (9-0, 6 KOs) pitched an eight-round shutout over Robert Simms (12-5-1, 3 KOs) of Saginaw, Mich. Fighting for the fourth time this year and second time in as many months, Taylor, who has only been boxing for eight years, overwhelmed his opponent with bruising body shots and cruised to his ninth straight triumph.

In the second televised bout, Lexington, Kentucky’s Samantha Worthington (12-0, 7 KOs) took one step closer to fighting for a world championship belt by earning a majority decision (99-91, 96-94, and 95-95) over Victoire Piteau (14-3, 2 KOs) of Saint-Maur, France to take home the WBA Super Lightweight Interim World Title. Co-promoted by Claressa Shields’ T-Rex Promotions and Salita Promotions, Worthington, unfazed by her opponent’s southpaw stance, lived up to her nickname and brought “The Heat” from the opening bell, hurting her counterpart with bruising body blows, and escaped with her 12th consecutive victory.

Kicking off the action on the main card, Montreal, Canada’s Caroline Veyre (10-1, 0 KOs) captured the WBC Silver Featherweight Championship with a punishing 10-round unanimous decision (99-91 twice and 98-92) in an international battle over Licia Boudersa (24-4-2, 4 KOs) of Lille, France. The WBC world title eliminator, which featured toe-to-toe action throughout, saw both fighters leave the ring with noticeable eye swelling after each landed numerous punishing shots to the opponent’s head.

Prior to the DAZN-televised portion of the event, three of Michigan’s rising stars recorded impressive victories. Opening the night, Flint native Sardius Simmons (2-0, 1 KO) dominated fellow Michigander Demetrius Banks (13-17-2, 6 KOs) of Detroit and pitched a shutout by registering a four-round unanimous decision (40-36 on all three scorecards).

Four fights later, Motor City’s own Da’Velle Smith (13-0, 8 KOs) remained undefeated by recording a convincing eight-round unanimous decision (80-71 twice and 79-72) over Maywood, Illinois’ Martez McGregor (9-9, 7 KOs).

Lastly, in a swing bout following the main event, Leon Lawson (18-1, 11 KOs) of Flint ended the festivities by registering a fourth-round TKO over Scranton, Pennsylvania’s Ryan Wilczak (11-2, 6 KOs). Referee Ben Rodriguez stopped the one-sided middleweight contest at 1:46.

UNDISPUTED HEAVYWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP – 10 ROUNDS
Claressa Shields (17-0, 3 KOs) defeated Lani Daniels (11-3, 1 KO) via unanimous decision
(100-90 and 99-91 twice)

Shields:
“I just want to thank God. I was praying for a sold-out Little Caesars Arena since the first time I fought here. Many people from around the world came out, and I am truly grateful for that.”

“I’ve been all over the world to some of the biggest boxing shows, and there is nothing like a Detroit crowd. They were chanting “Whoop that Trick.” This is definitely my house, and we blew the roof off. It was crazy. Throughout the rounds, I just heard how loud the crowd was. There was not a quiet moment the entire time I was out there.”

“Lani Daniels was a tough opponent. I broke her down to the body and the head. I mixed it up out there. She is just very, very tough. I knew she would be tough by just watching her fight. I could tell she worked on her speed. Her head was moving a whole lot, but she headbutted me twice, and that was something I had to look out for. I know she just wanted to survive the rounds. I feel like I beat her with my back against the ropes. I don’t mind fighting with my back to the ropes. I can throw from anywhere.”

MIDDLEWEIGHTS – 10 ROUNDS
Tony Harrison (30-4-1, 21 KOs) defeated Edward Diaz (15-6, 12 KOs) via unanimous decision
(98-91, 97-92, and 96-93)

Harrison:
“Two and a half years away from the ring has been a really long time. When I first got in the ring and felt those punches, I thought to myself, why am I coming back to this. As the fight progressed, I started to have fun, too much fun. I missed this so much. I love boxing.”

“I feel like I’m Steph Curry. I feel like I can land any shot. I think I have the best jab in the game. I could not miss tonight. I’m very disciplined, and I stay defensively responsible. In the last round, all I heard was the crowd cheering, and I just missed boxing.”

“Considering my long layoff, I think I did pretty damn good. Being with Salita Promotions, he’s going to do his part, and I am going to do my part. Hopefully, I can get back in the ring before the year ends. I just want to stay in the gym. I promise you, the more fights I have, the harder it is going to be for these fighters to beat me. My speed is still there. My power is still there. I’m a problem.”

HEAVYWEIGHTS – 8 ROUNDS
Pryce Taylor (9-0, 6 KOs) defeated Robert Simms (12-5-1, 3 KOs) via unanimous decision
(80-72 on all three scorecards)

Taylor:
“I’m not just a strong guy. I’m very agile, and I play basketball. I believe I showcased my boxing skills tonight.”

“I train for 12 rounds. Eight rounds were nothing. It was frustrating not being able to get him out of there. The end goal is to win, and I did what I had to do.”

“I listen to a lot of R&B music. I like to be calm heading into the ring because I’m already going to be pumped up to be getting into a fight, so I might as well relax when I can.”

WBA SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT WORLD INTERIM TITLE – 10 ROUNDS
Samantha Worthington (12-0, 7 KOs) defeated Victoire Piteau (14-3, 2 KOs) via majority decision (99-91, 96-94, and 95-95)

Worthington:
“This is my first of many belts. I’d like to thank Jesus. Without him, none of this would’ve been possible. He completely changed my life on February 8, 2015. He completely changed why I box and my perspective on life. He has rewritten my whole life story. It’s so cool to see Jesus move through this sport and see his light shine through. It’s cool to be a part of it. I’m excited for the journey.”

“It’s cool to be back in Michigan. Getting to fight here for the past four fights has been really sweet because I am building a fan base. We love this area. You guys have always been great to us. It’s an honor to be able to build a home base here. I want to thank Claressa Shields for allowing me to do so.”

“Piteau was my toughest opponent to date. She was 14-2 and I was 11-0 going into this fight. She had a lot of experience with plenty of wins. I rose to that challenge tonight. I want to have these fights where it makes me want to get out of bed and be the best fighter I can be. This was one of those fights because I knew this girl was going to come and challenge me, and that’s what she did. It forced me to train different things, adapt, and see what I am really made of.”

WBC SILVER FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE & WBC WORLD TITLE ELIMINATOR – 10 ROUNDS
Caroline Veyre (10-1, 0 KOs) defeated Licia Boudersa (24-4-2, 4 KOs) via unanimous decision
(99-91 twice and 98-92)
