Manila---Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. and National Master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. will showcase their talent in the 16th Penang Heritage City International Chess Open 2024 on December 23-27, 2024 at UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College in Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia.

“I hope to do well in the upcoming 16th Penang Heritage City International Chess Open 2024 on December 23-27, 2024 at UOW Malaysia KDU Penang University College in Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia," said the 62-year-old Antonio.

During the 2017 World Senior Chess Championship in Acqui Terme, Italy, he finished second to Grandmaster Julio Granda of Peru in the 50+ category.

"I would like to thank Penang Chess Association President and Malaysian Chess Federation Deputy President Madam See Swee Sie for inviting us to participate in this prestigious FIDE rated event," last word of Antonio.

On the part of Bernardino, a certified United States Chess Master and an online Arena Grandmaster, will try his best and said "I will do my very best for the flag and country and hope to gain some elo rating points."

“I will pour all that I know in the mind boggling chess games,” added the 47-year-old Bernardino, who helped the Rizal Technological Colleges, Barangay Malamig, Mandaluyong City chess team into an overall champion in the National Inter-Collegiate in the mid 90's.

Bernardino is the coach and delegation head of the PH chess team who won 2 golds and 1 bronze medal in the 32nd FIDE World Senior Chess Championship which was held at the Hotel Baleira, Porto Santo Island, Portugal from Nov. 16-29, 2024.

It shall be recalled that Bernardino achieved another remarkable victory by winning first place in the 3rd Laos International Chess Open 2024 held at the 2nd floor Parkson@ Naga Mall in Vientiane, Laos from September 1 to 6.

Among those who are supporting his chess campaign here and abroad are ALC Group of Companies Chairman and CEO D. Edgard Cabangon, International Billiard and Snooker Champion Marlon Manalo and Mr. Jessie Villasin.

Also competing are International Master Angelo Young, FIDE Master Nelson Villanueva, National Master Leonardo Alidani, Jan Francis Mirano, Paul John Lauron and Scott Jacob Sy.

There are two separate sections in the competition, the Open Section and the Challenger Section according to Penang Chess Association President and Malaysian Chess Federation Deputy President Madam See Swee Sie.

The Open Section offers a top prize of 10,000 Malaysian ringgit while the Challenger Section puts up 1,300 Malaysian ringgit for the 1st prize winner.-Marlon Bernardino-
