RUBILLLAR-SOSA TITLE FIGHT PLANNED FOR SEPTEMBER By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 16 Jun 2008 Juanito Rubillar will get another crack at the World Boxing Council light flyweight title against champion Edgar Sosa sometime in late September either in Las Vegas or Mexico. It will be the Orient Pacific Boxing Federation champion's fourth attempt to win the world title. Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today was informed of the plans by the camp of Rubillar?s manager Gabriel ?Bebot? Elorde after the veteran southpaw scored a split decision win over No.1 ranked former champion Omar Nino in a title eliminator at the Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico Sunday morning Manila time. Elorde said Rubillar deserved the win because ?he was the aggressor and landed more solid blows.? Well-known boxing writer and TV reporter James Blears who was at ringside to cover the fight told Viva Sports that the crowd didn?t question the split decision which he said was correct since Omar Nino was rusty from a long layoff and faded in the second half of the fight after a bright start. Filipino judge Rey Danseco whose 116-114 score correctly decided the fight in favor of Rubillar reported that the Filipino southpaw got his second wind in round six and ?dominated the rest of the rounds.? He said Rubillar started slow and took a ?lot of punishment? until the fifth round. Rubillar himself said that he almost blacked out after getting hit on the head in round five but ?immediately recovered and beat him (Nino) up.? Nino stunned Brian Viloria to win the title in August 2006 and retained the title with a draw in November that year but the fight was declared a ?no decision? after a post-fight test showed that Nino had taken a prohibited substance. Rubillar twice fought Mexican warrior Jorge Arce for the title and lost twelve round decisions although the loss in his second fight with Arce on September 4, 2004 in Mexico was regarded as highly controversial. Rubillar also dropped a twelve round decision to Thailand?s Wandee Singwancha in an interim title fight on July 18, 2006 after Viloria who was the champion at that time hurt his hand and couldn?t defend the crown.
