Nonito Donaire "feeling good" about Free Agency

PhilBoxing.com

IBF flyweight champion Nonito Donaire says he is "feeling good" after splitting with promoter Gary Shaw.

Donaire had been vocal in the past year about his disapproval of the job Gary Shaw Promotions had been doing guiding his career. Donaire expressed discontent when he was given only one month's notice to prepare for his first title defense against Luis Maldonado this past December.

The straw that broke the camel's back was when, already dissatisfied by inactivity, Donaire had been mentioned for an under card appearance on Vic Darchinyan's August Showtime date, whom Donaire blasted in five rounds for the flyweight title.

"I appreciate everything Gary Shaw did for me," Donaire, 19-1 (12 KO), tells BoxingScene.com. "He got me a title fight, but I think that is as far as he can take me. I don't really know whats going on with a lot of things. All I know is that I've been told that I'm a free agent."

Donaire had two years remaining on his contract with Gary Shaw Promotions, but manager Cameron Dunkin was able to negotiate a release this week.

"Like I said, if Gary could have gotten me some fight then I'd be good. It's another chapter in my life where I get to do things and fight the best fighters, not someone that nobody knows. I know my manager is going to lead me in the right direction.

"There's fights out there that my manager is negotiating. Whoever he wants me to fight, I'll fight. All I need to know is a time and date and I'm good."

"The Filipino Flash" is helping his brother Glenn prepare for his July 12 title opportunity against IBF light flyweight titlist Ulises Solis. Nonito Donaire has been told by his management to "get ready" because a fight of his own might be on the horizon shortly.

"The last time I kept training and training but there was nothing. I lost the desire to train because my body was tired and I didn't have anything to look forward to but this time I do. There is [Jorge] Arce, [WBO super flyweight titlist Fernando] Montiel, [WBC/WBA super flyweight titlist Cristian] Mijares that I can fight. If they want me to fight at 118, I can do that too.

"It's a good feeling to get emailed and be told 'Hey, get ready you might fight.' It's about time."
