RUSH FOR PACQUIAO STAMPS AS THEY GO ON SALE By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 02 Jun 2008 The first day cover stamps of Filipino ring idol and certified national treasure Manny Pacquiao went on sale this morning signaling a rush for the initial offering of four stamps mounted on a cover and costing P7 each. The very first buyer of the Manny Pacquiao special stamps which are a tribute to Pacquiao who is regarded as the greatest Filipino athlete of the modern era if not of all-time was Edgardo Atienza of Silang, Cavite. Atienza was at the Manila Central Post Office as soon as the offices opened and bought several sheets of ?Pacman? stamps which he said was ?a gift for his sister now living in Belgium.? The moment Philboxing.com, the widely-read boxing website broke the Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today story on the special stamp issue which also includes a fancy collectors package which will be out soon, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said he would place a big order for the stamps which are certain to be a hit in the US where Pacquiao has a tremendous following among Filipino-Americans and other boxing fans including Mexicans. Meantime, both Pacquiao and WBC lightweight champion David Diaz went their separate ways and back into the daily training grind for their much-awaited ?Lethal Combination? showdown at the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on June 28. Pacquiao and Diaz captivated fans at the West Wind Martial Arts School in Berkley during a free public workout. Pacquiao was the undoubted attraction but Diaz earned the respect of the predominantly Filipino fans for his likeable disposition. Pacquiao made it clear after an impressive workout that ?this fight means a lot to me because I can make history and bring more honor to my family and the Philippines.? He said beating Diaz and becoming the first Asian to win four world titles was ?very important.? Top Rank promoter Bob Arum justified the decision to move up in weight pointing out that Pacquiao starves himself to stay at 1`30 pounds? in which he is the WBC champion following his split decision win over Juan Manuel Marquez last March 15. Diaz who is admired in his hometown of Chicago said with a laugh ?if I had my way theyd make the ring four-by-four so the two of us could go at it right there. But seriously this should be a great fight because Manny loves to fight toe-to-toe and so do. We have a lot of respect for each other.? PACQUIAO FAN BUYS STAMPS.
