Christian Gian Karlo Arca to play in Manny Pacquiao International Open PhilBoxing.com Fri, 09 Dec 2022 MANILA---THE Philippines’ chess wunderkind Christian Gian Karlo Arca will head to General Santos City with hopes of improving his world ranking aside from bringing more honors for the country. Accompanied by his father/coach Arman, Christian will see action at the MPCL Manny Pacquiao International Opem Chess Festival slated from December 13 to 17 at the Family Country Hotel in General Santos City. Vitaliy Bernadskiy of Ukraine (Elo 2615) will lead foreign-based grandmasters (GM) that includes Hovhannes Gabuzyan of Armenia (Elo 2586), Lucas Van Foreest of the Netherlands (Elo 2577), Vitaly Sivuk of Sweden (Elo 2570) and Luigi Basso Pier of Italy (Elo 2516). Other early registrants were International Masters (IM) Daniel Bryant of the USA (Elo 2413) and Dragos Ceres of Moldova (Elo 2412), Konstantin Sek of Russia (Elo 2426), Wee Zhun Teh of Malaysia (Elo 1908) and Edgardo Borigas of Hongkong (Elo 1734). Christian is also scheduled to compete in the GMG Chess Open Rapid Chess Tournament on December 31 and the Sir Herky Del Mundo Memorial Open Rapid Chess Tournament on Jan. 3, 2023, both will be held at the Second Floor Open Kitchen Foodhall, Rockwell Business Center, Sheridan Street in Mandaluyong City, backed up by Coach Gerald Ferriol and Fide Master Paolo Del Mundo. His campaign locally and internationally were supported by Davao del Norte Gov. Edwin Jubahib, Rep. Alan Dujali, Mayor Jenny Barzaga and Rep. Pidi Barzaga. Christian is also fresh from winning the Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship held in Asia Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand from Nov. 4 to 12. The 13-year-old Christian is a Grade 8 student of Dasmariñas Integrated High School, playing under the guidance of Rep. Pidi Barzaga, Mayor Jenny Barzaga, National Coach Fide Master Roel Abelgas and Class Adviser Mrs. Melinda Calumaya finished 7.5 points in nine outings of the Standard time control format to went home Gold Individual Award in the Under-14 category plus conditional Fide Master (FM) title. The Panabo City, Davao del Norte native Christian managed to become the highest pointer in leading the Philippine team of Under 14 class to a Gold Team Awards both Rapid and Standard Events. Christian, a certified National Master (NM) and online Arena Grandmaster (AGM) also took Bronze Individual Rapid Award. Christian alongside Ivan Travis Cu and John Cyrus Borce also won Silver Team Blitz award.
