CANOY STOPS HORIKAWA, CAPTURES OPBF BELT IN OSAKA

Sanman’s Joey Canoy (W19 L5 KO11) captures the OPBF Light Flyweight Belt in Osaka, Japan as he brutally stops homeboy Kenichi Horikawa in the seventh round. Horikawa was the bigger fighter and pressured Canoy from the get go occasionally hitting the smaller Filipino. However Canoy kept on making his presence felt by hitting the Japanese foe with accurate powershots to the body and head. Canoy’s counterpunching was effective and were taking their toll as the rounds passed.
Horikawa was dropped in the second round but was not ruled as a legitimate knockdown. Sensing that he cannot win by going the distance, Canoy went all in going toe to toe with Horikawa round by round. It was in the fateful seventh round that the Japanese was cornered and battered with a barrage of combinations. Later in the round, a perfect uppercut to the head caught Horikawa sending him to the canvas unconscious. The referee did not bother to count and waved off his hands thus awarding the victory to the road warrior Canoy.
“This is a big win for Joey and will present bigger opportunities for him next year. This is a big leap in his rankings. His hard work paid off indeed,” Sanman CEO Jim Claude Manangquil said. Canoy himself was very happy with his spectacular win. “Thank you Lord for this Christmas gift for me and my team. This is dedicated to my family and team Sanman and of course to my countrymen. I will go back training and keep myself in best shape because I know bigger fights are coming,” Canoy stated.
