MASAM SPORTS 83: NONITO DONAIRE VS. JASON MOLONEY WBC BANTAMWEIGHT TITLE ELIMINATOR ANNOUNCED

PhilBoxing.com

The former four-division world champion and former Fighter of the Year awardee Nonito “Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr., is pre-arranged to fight Australian world title challenger Jason Moloney in his resurgence fight next year.

The showdown was announced during the World Boxing Council (WBC) Convention in Acapulco, Mexico last week together with other proposed big time bouts scheduled to take place next year.

However there is no final schedule yet, but the WBC has already pre-approved the match between Donaire and Moloney which could be considered as a world title eliminator.

In his last outing Donaire lost his WBC world bantamweight title to undefeated pound-for-pound Japanese fighter Naoya Inoue last June 7 in Saitama, Japan by a second round technical knockout.

The rematch was a far cry from their Fight of the Year 2019 first encounter. The agonizing setback caused Donaire to think about moving back to the super flyweight division.

He said he has a super flyweight opportunity to get the official fifth division title. He focused on fighting Chocolatito Gonzalez and Juan Francisco Estrada.

But with the WBC announcement, Donaire most probably will remain in the bantamweight division since Inoue is also contemplating on moving up to a heavier weight if he wins the unification bout against WBO champion Paul Butler on December 13 in Tokyo, Japan.

However, if Inoue decides to continue fighting at the bantamweight division, then Donaire Jr. and Moloney will instead clash for the No. 1 contender position.

With the defeat to Inoue, Donaire's record dropped to 42-7 with 28 knockouts, while Moloney who just grabbed the WBC silver bantamweight and the WBO international bantamweight titles against Filipino Aston Palicte, improved his slate to a 25-2 slate with 19 knockouts.

Moloney scored a very convincing third round technical knockout against Palicte in their June 5 showdown in Melbourne, Australia to seize the two regional titles. Then he won another bout against Nawaphon Kaikanha last October 16 also in Melbourne.
