PH dominates Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship in Bangkok PhilBoxing.com Sun, 13 Nov 2022 MANILA---A golden run for the country's Team Philippines on the world stage. Team Philippines won a total of 18 golds, 8 silvers and 12 bronze medals to dominate the standard chess competition in the just concluded Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship held November 4 to 12 at the Asian Hotel in Bangkok Thailand. Team Philippines was also adjudged as the best Chess Federation over Mongolia and Vietnam who placed 1st and 2nd runner-ups respectively according to National Arbiter/National Master Rodolfo "Rudy" Toledo. The chessfest participated in by 181 youth woodpushers from 12 countries in Eastern Asia hosted by Thailand Chess Association under the auspices and sanctioned by World Chess Federation (FIDE). Dasmarinas City, Cavite's Christian Gian Karlo Arca made a whirlwind record in chess competition. The 13-year-old Arca,a Grade 8 student of Dasmariñas Integrated High School, playing under the guidance of Rep. Pidi Barzaga, Mayor Jenny Barzaga, National Coach Fide Master Roel Abelgas and Class Adviser Mrs. Melinda Calumaya finished 7.5 points in nine outings of the Standard time control format to go home Gold Individual Award in the Under-14 category plus an outright Fide Master (FM) title. The Panabo City, Davao del Norte native Arca managed to become the highest pointer in order to lead the Philippine team of Under 14 class to a Gold Team Awards both Rapid and Standard Events. Arca, a certified National Master (NM) and online Arena Grandmaster (AGM) also took Bronze Individual Rapid Award. Arca alongside Ivan Travis Cu and John Cyrus Borce also won Silver Team Blitz award. Arca also received 2 trophies for his efforts being U14 Player with most received awards. Al-Basher "Basty" Buto of Cainta, Rizal contributed 3 Golds, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze medal. Buto, who hails from Marawi City also got a Fide Master title after winning the the U-12 class. Nika Juris Nicolas of Pasig City, meantime took 1 Gold, 1 Silver medal plus a Woman Candidate Master title while Arleah Cassandra Sapuan of Valencia, Negros, Oriental, a Grade 10 student of FEU Dilliman, playing under the guidance of multi-titled coach Grandmaster Jayson O. Gonzales won 2 Golds and 1 Bronze in the Girls Under 16 Division. The Philippines' campaign was being supported by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines and the Philippine Sports Commission.-Marlon Bernardino- |
