MANILA---National Master/Coach Gerald Ferriol of the Philippines came close to stunning heavily favored Grandmaster Lalit Babu M R of India and barge into the top 2 but blew his golden chance with critical mistakes in the end, resulting to a heartbreaking defeat in the ninth and final round on Sunday night, October 30, that sent him crashing out from the top 2 of the 20th Bangkok Chess Club Open 2022 Individual Chess Championships held at Shangri-La Chiang Mai Hotel, Chiang Mai, Thailand.
The win enabled the Indian GM to finish in a tie for 2nd to 5th places in the group of 7.0 pointers that included former solo leader GM Bobby Cheng of Australia, GM Hrant Melkumyan of Armenia and GM Aryan Tari of Norway.
GM Surya Shekhar Ganguly of India won the title after beating GM Cheng in the last round, to raise his total to 7.5 points.
