PhilBoxing.com

SARDINIA, ITALY---International Master Angelo Abundo Young destroyed National Master Cyril Ortega in their rapid duel to power inaugural champion Laguna to a 11-10 thrashing of Surigao in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) Online Chess Tournament Wednesday, October 19, virtually held at Chess.com Platform.

Young, who has topped the board 1 individual gold medalist during the 1st Masskara Festival National Inter-Provinces, Cities and Municipalities Chess Team Championships recently held at the Forest Park Resort in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, overpowered Ortega in 38 moves of a King's Indian defense to lift the Heroes to their tenth win against four losses.
Surigao slipped to 5-9.

"This is my chance to redeem myself (Senior category) from the last conference… I tried to work hard and prepare before the game to help my team (Laguna Heroes)," said Young, who is scheduled to represent the country together with 13-time Philippine Open Champion Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. in the upcoming World Senior Individual Chess Championships take place from November 14-27, 2022, in Assisi, Umbria, Italy.

"It was a tough match for us against Surigao and Camarines-Iriga Teams since our player, Christian Nanola, failed to catch up in both matches due to a tremendous traffic from work," said Arena Grandmaster Dr. Fred Paez of Jolly Smile Dental Clinic, one of the four co-team owner of the Laguna Heroes that include Mr. David Nithyananthan of KALARO and Greatech Philippines, Inc., Engr. Billy Joe Ereňo of Costbusters Philippines Corp. and Engr. Benjamin Dy of SDC Global Choice Foods.

An 8-time Illinois, USA chess champion, Young also got help from Fide Master Roel Abelgas and Arena Grandmaster Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo.

Abelgas, Laguna’s newly acquired reinforcement from Davao, bested John Ranel Morazo, while Lorenzo trounced Fide Master Vince Alaan.

Grandmaster John Paul Gomez drew with Lennon Hart Salgados while Richie Jocson split the points with Rhenz Rheann Auza.
Mariel Batulan Romero and Antonio Chavez gave the good fight for Surigao after beating Michella Concio and Christian Nanola.
After their blitz encounter ended in a 3-4 score in favor for Surigao, Young struck the hardest in dominating the rapid phase, 8-6, and claiming the win.

Laguna routed Camarines-Iriga, 12-9, in the following round.-Marlon Bernardino-
