NAZARIO SAYS HE'S CAUTIONED PACQUIAO ABOUT DIAZ By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Fri, 25 Apr 2008 The former business manager of Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao says he has cautioned Pacquiao about taking WBC lightweight champion David Diaz lightly in their June 28 showdown at the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel Casino on June 28. Promoter Bob Arum who was on his way to Quartero, Mexico for a fight card in which NABF super bantamweight champion Bernabe Concepcion will defend his title against former Olympic alternate Torrence Daniels said he had arranged a big press conference on the eve of the Oscar De La Hoya ? Steve Forbes fight at the Home Depot to obviously capitalize on the media presence. Arum has now been forced to re-set the press conference with Pacquiao and Diaz for May 13 and to reschedule the various promotional stops he had earlier laid out. Both Arum and celebrated trainer Freddie Roach who said Pacquiao had committed to train for eight weeks at the Wild Card Gym were disappointed over the delay. Nazario said that Arum may have arranged the press conference without getting Pacquiao?s confirmation and it would be unfair to blame Pacquiao. The leader of the original Team Pacquiao who met him in Cebu City last weekend said Pacquiao weighed 150 pounds and would have to reduce 15 pounds to make the lightweight limit. Nazario cautioned Pacquiao saying ?you?ll be fighting at a higher weight and that guy (Diaz) is bigger than you and you?ll be wearing ten ounce gloves (not eight as in past fights) and Diaz may be able to carry your punches.? Nazario said Pacquiao?s response was ?you think he can do that. I don?t think so.? Pacquiao?s trip to Los Angeles is being pushed back because of a visit to China to tour the 2008 Olympic Games facilities and will be reportedly accompanied by constant companion, Ilocos Sur governor Chavit Singson and Rex Wakee? Salud who is a Filipino of Chinese descent. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
