DONAIRE LANGUISHING WITHOUT A FIGHT By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 24 Apr 2008 International Boxing Federation flyweight champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire who is languishing without a fight says he is like a caged person who is ?ready to go out and terrorize people (opponents) right now.? In an overseas telephone conversation with Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today, Donaire was clearly disappointed that his planned title defense against Hussein Hussein in Dubai this month was cancelled and indicated he was languishing without a fight. Donaire said he was ?doing some taekwondo training with his girlfriend (Rachael Marcial), trying to get in shape, conditioning myself really but not over-training myself like I was training for a fight. ? Marcial is competing in a collegiate national championship at Stanford this weekend. Donaire said there was ?nothing going on? although there were proposals for a non-title fight in June and another fight in August although his manager Cameron Dunkin told him ?don?t get excited because it can be cancelled any moment.? The stylish 112 pound champion who won the IBF/IBO titles with a smashing stoppage of Australia?s Vic Darchinyan in the fifth round last July 7 and then scored a spectacular eight round TKO over Mexican Luis Maldonado last December 1 said he had been informed by Dunkin that promoter Gary Shaw indicated there might be a fight in August on Showtime with Darchinyan vs IBF super flyweight champion Dimitri Kirilov as the main event and Donaire as the supporting bout. Donaire revealed that his manager was ?pissed off because I knocked the guy (Darchinyan) out and yet he?s still the main event.? Donaire said he hadn?t spoken to Shaw. Donaire left Las Vegas where he was training for the Dubai fight and said there?s nothing he can do but wait and hope. He said he would love to fight in the Philippines but he ?wants everything to be sure because I don?t want to be training for a whole month and then have people back out of it.? Donaire said if a fight in the Philippines materializes he would ?definitely like to fight before my hometown fans.? Donaire at the same time said he ?felt great to be compared to the late ?Flash? Elorde who was a great man but I don?t think I am worthy of it yet but I will keep going.? Donaire expressed his gratitude to WBC founding secretary general Rudy Salud who complemented Donaire saying he was a right-handed Elorde.
