HAYA JOINS BANTAYAN-DAVAO WAR PhilBoxing.com Thu, 24 Apr 2008 Sixty-three years ago, the Philippine Commonwealth liberation troops landed on the shores of Bantayan Islands to ward off Japanese invaders. On April 26, another force will land the islands headed by rising ALA jewel Weng Haya to wage a friendly campaign of boxing against veteran fighter Ruben Santillanosa of Libak, Sultan Kudarat. The goal is to bring together the youth of the islands into a boxing entertainment that hopes to ignite grassroots interest in the game. With a 90 percent win record and 50 percent KO, RP No. 13 super bantamweight Haya will wage his 11th fight against six-time championship contender Santillanosa whose 25 career fights showcase a determined warrior who keeps on coming back against all odds. Santillanosa began his pro career on Oct 26, 2003 in a 5-round TKO of fellow starter Frank Ombid in Gensan, the hometown of Pinoy icon Manny Pacquiao. His fifth Philippine fight ended in another stoppage of his opponent in the second round in 2004, after which he turned his sights off the Philippine shores and towards Australia. And in the last four years, 16 of his 25 fights are won and lost in the ?terra australis incognita? (unknown land of the south). In early March, Haya and a host of young ALA Gym pugilists reignited boxing frenzy in Mandaue City winning over veteran Pedro Malco by unanimous decision. The undercard will blow a ring war between warriors of Bantayan Island and Davao City. Michael Otic of Madridejos (Bantayan Island) and Jaylo Merlin of Quimbao Stable (Davao City). Another four-round will see Albert Villacampa of Hilontungan exchange blows with Samuel Capagngan (also of Quiambao Stable). Yao Ming of Atop-Atopi opens the night squaring off against Mark Maguan. Crowds of this island arena will also witness the presence of reigning WBO Youth super flyweight champion AJ ?Bazooka? Banal and a host of exciting surprises. The evening tyrade is brought to you by ALA Promotions, in cooperation with Fighter Wine, Durabloom, Island Shopping Corporation, and the Municipality of Bantayan through its municipal boxing program and Chad Ca?ares. Amateur rounds start at 8:00 PM at the Bantayan Multipurpose Center. |
