Filipino International Master Oliver Dimakiling remains on top after fourth-round draw

PhilBoxing.com

MANILA---Filipino International Master Oliver Dimakiling drew with erstwhile co-leader Singapore's newly minted Grandmaster Tin Jingyao to keep his share of the lead with the latter after four rounds in the Grand Copthorne Professor Lim Kok Ann Invitational GM Tournament 2022 in Grand Copthorne Waterfront, Singapore, Wednesday, June 15, 2022.

Dimakiling, playing the white pieces, halved the point after 47 moves of London System Opening to slightly improve to 3.5 points and shared the top leaderboard with Tin Jingyao in this single round robin format, 10 player's field using the 90 minutes plus 30 seconds increment, organized by the Singapore Chess Federation under the auspices of the World Chess Federation (FIDE).

"I can only hope that this momentum continues," said the Davao City native Dimakiling who celebrated his 42nd birthday on Wednesday.

One and Half a point behind with 2.0 points each are Myanmar's International Master Wynn Zaw Htun, Vietnamese Grandmaster Nguyen Anh Dung, Singaporean International Master Jagadeesh Siddharth, top seed Indian Grandmaster Adhiban B. and British Grandmaster Daniel Howard Fernandez.

Wynn Zaw Htun beat Australian International Master IM James Morris after 71 moves of Catalan Opening; Anh Dung toppled Singaporean Woman Grandmaster Gong Qianyun after 60 moves of Caro-Kann defense; Siddharth drew with Adhiban B after 30 moves of Queen's Gambit Accepted while Fernandez split the point with Indonesia's International Master Irine Kharisma Sukandar after 66 moves of Ruy Lopez Opening.

The Dubai based Dimakiling only needed one norm to earn a GM title that he has been chasing for several years now.
He got his first GM norm when he tied for first place in the Malaysian Open in 2006 while the second norm was when he finished runner-up in the Battle of the GMs in Boracay in 2012. He has already achieved 2500 ELO barrier.

For a number of years Ph chess has been longing, thirsting and wanting for another GM to come.

The last time that the country produced GM is on 2012 courtesy of Richard Bitoon and Oliver Barbosa.-Marlon Bernardino-
