ELORDE HOPING TO STAGE RUBILLAR ELIMINATOR IN MANILA By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 17 Apr 2008 Gabriel ?Bebot? Elorde is still trying to arrange for the WBC light flyweight title eliminator between Juanito Rubillar and former champion Omar Nino to be staged in Manila. Elorde made the statement on the Sports Chat radio show hosted by "Main Event" TV analyst Dennis Principe after WBC president Don Jose Sulaiman called us and requested us to convey a message from him to Elorde regarding the title eliminator. Sulaiman said the promoters of Omar Nino wanted to stage the title eliminator in the Mexican?s hometown and he had convinced them to up the original purse offer from $25,000 to $30,000 which we told Elorde was a ?very good offer.? However, Elorde said he was ?talking with somebody? whose identity he didn?t divulge in an effort to hold the title eliminator in Manila and would know by today, what the decision is. Elorde had earlier scrapped plans for Rubillar to fight Ulises Solis for the IBF crown which Sulaiman said would be a slap on his face since Rubillar was ranked No. 2 by the WBC and had previously fought Jorge Arce twice for the title in Mexico. Elorde claimed he backed out after the planned April fight card in Dubai was canceled and the fight was moved to Mexico in May. Besides, Elorde complained that the $5,000 advance promised Rubillar when the contract was signed was not paid. However, well-known promoter Sammy Gello-ani who represented international matchmaker Sampson Lewkowicz in the negotiations said he was personally willing to advance the $5,000 the moment Rubillar?s camp agreed. But Elorde turned it down, this time claiming the WBC was ?much respected? after earlier stating that ?boxers always want to fight for world titles? which is why the title fight contract against Solis was signed.
