MASAM SPORTS 31: JOE NOYNAY REMATCH AGAINST LIAM WILSON FOR WBO ASIA PACIFIC SUPERFEATHERWEIGHT TITLE IS SCHEDULED ON MARCH 2

PhilBoxing.com

World Boxing Organization regional champion Joe “Jaw Breaker” Noynay is slated for a rematch against Australian Aussie Liam Wilson on March 2 at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Center in Brisbane, Australia.

The return bout seemed weird since Noynay annihilated his former undefeated opponent to win the WBO Asia Pacific super featherweight title as he sent the Aussie four times to the canvas en route to a fifth round technical knockout victory.

On July 7, 2021, Noynay (19-2-2, 8 KOs) scored an upset TKO conquest over the great favorite Wilson (9-1, 6 KOs) in his home turf in Newcastle, Australia. The win was very convincing as the Filipino successfully defended his WBO AsPac regional title.

The 26-year-old Noynay from Bogo City, Cebu, is currently rated No. 5 in the WBO super featherweight division. He won the vacant WBO Asia Pacific super featherweight title on April 20, 2019 by upsetting Kosuke Saka in the Japanese territory in Osaka Japan by a second round technical knockout.

After beating Saka, Noynay knocked out another Japanese Satoshi Shimizu in Tokyo in the sixth round on July 12, 2019 to defend the title. Then he had a fifth round technical draw with Kenichi Ogawa and retained the title on December 7, 2019.

The only time Noynay fought in Cebu was in 2018 against Hector Garcia Montes of Mexico in his hometown in Bogo City on April 7, 2018. That time he successfully defended his WBO Asia Pacific Youth super featherweight title beating Montes by majority decision.

Noynay defeated China's Jinxiang Pan by eighth round technical decision on December 16, 2017 at the Zhongshan Sports Arena, Zhongshan, China. Noynay won the WBO Asia Pacific Youth super featherweight title.

Before their encounter, Wilson was considered as a deadly challenger due to his undefeated winning slate before his first career loss to Noynay.

He beat three Filipinos in Francis Chua by UD10, Rodynie Rafol by TKO3, and Ariel Puton by TKO2. He won the IBF Youth super featherweight title defeating Mauro Alex Hasan Perouene of Argentina by UD10.

The Cebuano champ who is a protege of the Elorde Boxing Gym, get rid of his ring rust after a 20-month pandemic layoff by flooring Wilson four times and stopped the dreaded Australian foe in five rounds.

Noynay started quick and strong when he decked Wilson just in the opening round with a thundering left hook. Two perfectly timed left hooks again sent Wilson twice to the floor in the fourth stanza but the Australian showed guts when he got up on both occasions.

Cheered by his hometown fans, the courageous Wilson went on fighting in the fifth round but Noynay unleashed a pummeling left straight that sent Wilson off balance and forcing the referee to stop the onslaught on the ill-fated challenger. The official time was 2 minutes, 40 seconds of the fifth round.

Wilson is an orthodox fighter standing 5′ 9½″ from Redcliffe, Queensland, Australia now residing in Caboolture, Queensland, Australia.

Noynay is a southpaw boxer standing 5′ 8″ from Bogo, Cebu, Philippines now residing in Paranaque City, Metro Manila, Philippines.

Noynay is nearing a world title shot. He is currently ranked No. 5 by the WBO, No. 14 by the IBF and No. 13 by the WBC.

If he wins the rematch, Noynay will have a chance at a world title crack for the WBO super featherweight title presently held by American champion Shakur Stevenson.
