All eyes on Young

MANILA---8-time Illinois, USA chess champion International Master (IM) Angelo Abundo Young will be the player to watch when the Mayor Samuel "Sammy" S. Co Pasalamat Festival 2022 Individual Rapid Chess Championship (Over the Board) gets going on January 12 and 13, 2022 at the Rotunda Building 2nd Floor in Pagadian City.
The 2-day event is sponsored by the City Government of Pagadian thru Mayor Samuel "Sammy" S. Co, organized by the PagZamSur Professional Chess Players Association and the Brotherhood of Knights of the Squaretable, Inc.
“I’m hoping for the best but the field is really tough because all participants have a chance to win it also,” said the Manila resident Young, who is also scheduled to play in the upcoming National Master Zulfikar Sali Inter-Cities and Municipalities Chess Team Championship on January 22 to 23, 2022 in Zamboanga City.
Also seeing action in the Rapid event are National Master Joey Florendo, National Master Paulo James Florendo and National Master Raymond Salcedo of Zamboanga City, Roumundo Edades of Lapuyan, Zamboanga del Sur, Jones Maghuyop of Margosatubig, Zamboanga del Sur, Michael Ambuang of Dipolog City, Joel Fernan of Pagadian City and Ghian Michael Basilad Aleria of Panabo City, Davao del Norte.
The champion will earn P15,000. The second placer will get P10,000, third P6,000, fourth P4,000, fifth P2,000 and sixth P1,000.
Seventh to tenth places will receive P700 each while 11th to 15th place will bring home P500 each. To those who make it to the top 25th place will pocket P300 each.
Special prizes for the top performer Executive, Senior, Junior, Kiddy and Lady.
"Players must be vaccinated to join (single dose is considered)," said Mr. Jezreel Lopez.
