Where do Fury and Usyk Wins Leave Anthony Joshua? PhilBoxing.com Sat, 23 Oct 2021 The trilogy of fights between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder is finally at an end and it’s hard to see the two men stepping into a ring again. Wilder was eager to go through with the third battle but defeat will surely mean that the American will look elsewhere for his next bout. Fury will also be weighing up his options as his persistent opponent finally gives way. The logical next step would have been a highly anticipated, all-British affair against Anthony Joshua but AJ’s loss to Oleksandr Usyk leaves an element of confusion within the heavyweight division. AJ in the Cold It had all been scripted at the start of the year. Fight fans in the UK and beyond wanted to see the ultimate showdown between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. It would prove just who is the best of British and also who is the best heavyweight in the world right now. Fury v Joshua may seem like a distant proposition in the light of recent events but there are betting markets still in place for a future fight. It’s not really surprising to learn that bookmakers affiliated with Asiabet.org are showing Fury to be the odds on favorite here. Asiabet also have lists of prices for a Joshua v Wilder fight and for a potential rematch against Oleksandr Usyk. As soon as one of those fights is confirmed, the markets will get busier and there will be news and opinion articles in place, related to the bout and to boxing in general. If readers want to get involved, it’s possible to sign up with anyone from the panel of sportsbooks. There are generous welcome promotions available, along with effective customer service and a choice of deposit options to get things started. It’s a comprehensive website but who will the markets be showing as Anthony Joshua’s next opponent? Usyk outsmarts and dethrones Joshua last month. Unfinished Business The majority opinion is that AJ will be looking to take advantage of the rematch clause that will see him step back into the ring with Oleksandr Usyk. It’s happened before when Joshua lost to Andy Ruiz Jr before beating the American comfortably at the second time of asking. Ruiz’s opening win was something of a shock but that wasn’t the case with Usyk. The Ukrainian is a much better fighter and Joshua’s eagerness to take him on again must be seen as a gamble. Defeat in any follow up contest could just leave Anthony Joshua with nowhere to go and no-one to fight. Fury and Wilder in AJ’s Sights While that loss to Usyk was an obvious setback in Anthony Joshua’s career, it doesn’t necessarily exclude him from lining up against Tyson Fury in the ring. Fury expressed his disappointment over that defeat and clearly the Gypsy King wants the chance to prove just who is the best of British. Joshua has been less vocal about facing Fury but it could still be a logical next step. Other options would include Deontay Wilder who, having lost to Fury, can no longer expect to step back into the ring with his long-time opponent. The American could see a shot at Anthony Joshua as his best next move. At least there are options but which route will AJ choose? End of the Road? There is one other option to consider but it’s not one that any fight fan wants to see. Anthony Joshua has won heavyweight belts and an Olympic Gold Medal so is there anything left to achieve for the man from Watford? Retirement is an option and, while that’s not the most likely route right now, the subject would certainly come up if AJ were to lose to Oleksandr Usyk for a second time. For the time being, a rematch with the Ukrainian appears to be Joshua’s most plausible choice. It’s certainly the most meaningful fight on his personal horizon as it gives him the opportunity to reclaim the belts that he lost at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. If he wins, Joshua can then look at other prospective opponents with Tyson Fury the most likely candidate. A defeat would bring that retirement question under the spotlight but we all hope that AJ has more to offer within the ring. Top photo credit: "Team GB27" (CC BY-NC-ND 2.0) by Mabacam |
