Laguna bests San Juan in PCAP chess PhilBoxing.com Thu, 30 Sep 2021 MANILA, Philippines---The Laguna Heroes pulled a 12.5-8.5 escape over San Juan Predators in the third conference Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) virtually held at Chess.com Platform on Wednesday, September 29, 2021. Fide Master Austin Jacob Literatus, Michella Concio and Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo delivered the victories for Laguna in the rapid competition by pulling off contrasting wins over Narquingel Reyes, Shariz Ngo and Gavin Ong. Literatus defeated Reyes in 61 moves of English Opening, Concio subdued Ngo in 57 moves of Caro-Kann defense while Lorenzo crushed Ong in 46 moves of English Opening. Grandmaster John Paul Gomez drew with National Master Michael Gotel in 11 moves of Slav defense while Vince Angelo Medina split the point with Narciso Gumila in 77 moves of Trompovsky Opening. Fide Master Narquinden Reyes and International Master Ricardo de Guzman spearheaded San Juan after beating Grandmaster Rogelio "Banjo" Barcenilla Jr. and Fide Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad, respectively. “Big character win for us. The team have shown so much maturity to overcome adversity and tremendous pressure,” said Arena Grandmaster Dr.Fred Paez, one of the four co-team owner of the Laguna Heroes that include Mr. David Nithyananthan of KALARO, Engr. Benjamin Dy of SDC Global Choice and Engr. Jonathan Mamaril of Oregon, USA. Woman National Master Karen Enriquez, GM Gomez and Medina delivered the wins for the Blitz category to immediately grab the much-needed momentum for Laguna. Backed up by Greatech Philippines, Inc., SDC Global Choice, Jolly Smile Dental Clinic, KALARO and Rotary Club of Nuvali, the Laguna Heroes also beat Isabela Knight Raiders, 15.5-5.5.- Laguna finished the Northern Division elimination round with 8-1 win-loss records, the same output of San Juan.-Marlon Bernardino-  |
