Mexican boxer Jeannette Zacarias Zapata, 18, died in Canada after last weekend's fight By Gabriel F. Cordero PhilBoxing.com Fri, 03 Sep 2021 Jeanette Zacarias Zapata, center, takes a punch from Marie-Pier Houle, right, during their welterweight battle at the IGA stadium in Montreal on Saturday, Aug. 28. Mexican boxer Jeanette Zacarías Zapata died at the age of 18, after spending several days in the hospital in a coma, as a result of the knockout she suffered in last weekend's fight against Canadian Marie Pier Houle. During last weekend at the GYM Gala Boxing, which was held at the IGA Stadium in Montreal, the young boxer, who fought her first fight outside of Mexico after her debut in 2018, was seen against the ropes in the last seconds of the fourth round. She received heavy punishment that forced the referee to stop the fight. As a result of the blows she went through, while her rival celebrated the victory, the fighter fainted and convulsed until she was on the canvas. After her admission to the hospital, according to the promoter Yvon Michel, Zacarías did not regain consciousness, so "they decided to sedate her so that her body and brain could rest." Zacarías Zapata had been knocked out last May in six episodes by Cynthia Lozano upon her return to the ring after a period of inactivity of two and a half years. Her professional record is two wins, none by knockout, in exchange for four losses, three of them by the same route. Zacarías Zapata, originally from Aguascalientes, was knocked out by the Canadian and was in an induced coma, since she was admitted to the hospital. Jeannette Zacarías was the best option for Houle. After not finding rivals in Canada and the United States, due to Covid-19 restrictions, the best option focused on Mexico. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Gabriel F. Cordero. |
