MICHAEL CONLAN FACES TJ DOHENY AT FEILE IN AUGUST
PhilBoxing.com Tue, 06 Jul 2021
Michael Conlan will return to the ring against former world champion TJ Doheny at Falls Park in Belfast this summer.
The fight on Friday 6 August is promoted by Top Rank and will be part of the Feile an Phobail Festival, with the all-Irish clash between Conlan (15-0, 8 KOs) and Doheny (22-2, 6 KOs) headlining the card.
Conlan is back following his victory over Ionut Baluta in April, with the undefeated star looking to move a step closer to a world title shot at super-bantamweight.
He’s set for his toughest test to date against Doheny, who held the IBF world title from 2018 to 2019, and will be taking part in his first fight in his home country of Ireland.
Conlan said: “I’m very excited to be back fighting in my city. In 2019 it was special but I believe this year it will be more so as we have been starved of live events due to the pandemic but August 6th will show Belfast is back!
It’s a honour to share the ring with TJ, I have a lot of respect for him and his achievements being a former world champion, I believe it’s my toughest fight to date and with that I will make my biggest statement in my quest to be world champion.”
Doheny said: “I’m really happy to be back in action after being out of the ring for over a year. This will be my first time fighting on Irish soil and what a way to make a homecoming.
“It’s arguably Ireland’s top two fighters going at it in front of a large crowd. It doesn’t get much bigger than this for an all-Irish clash and the fans are in for a real treat.
“This is the kind of fight that I have been craving since my split decision loss to Danny Roman in a world title unification. High level opposition is what motivates me and helps me raise my game and I cannot wait for this.”
