The Unsettled Issue ? Pac or JMM By Epifanio M. Almeda PhilBoxing.com Tue, 18 Mar 2008 Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez is a super-fight. This is a settled issue. Who is the better fighter between the two? Each tried but failed in the 24 rounds so far to convince the sceptic of the other side that he is the better fighter. Post fight reviews equally say one defeated the other. One could not convincingly say that, with the win, Manny is the better fighter than JMM as he could with Manny over Erik Morales or Marco Antonio Barrera. Manny?s split decision win settles the issue that he is not a beater of only ?has-been? fighters. JMM was the defending WBC champion and he is a ?has been? only as such champion. His out landing the Pacman with power shots, as shown by compu box data, proves that JMM is not a ?has been? as a fighter that he still is even at 34 years of age. Of course one fighter out landing an opponent in the total power shots count of the whole fight does not mean he won over the opponent. The fight is judged by the round and it is not only the number that matters to a judge but the damaging effect a power shot inflicts on the recipient. This was the case of the Oscar dela Hoya-Shane Mosley II fight. Oscar out landed Shane per compu box stats but Shane won. After being announced as ?the new WBC super-featherweight champion?, many still could not say Manny has convincingly won over JMM. Even Freddie Roach was quoted that the fight result could have gone either way. Manny?s toughness in surviving JMM?s power shots shows Manny?s fighting heart his countrymen has been and still are proud of. JMM?s recovery prowess from Manny?s power shots likewise shows that JMM?s days as a world class calibre fighter are still far from over. JMM still remains Manny?s most viable pretender to his claim as the best 130-pounder today. A 3rd fight in the super-featherweight, or junior-lightweight, may no longer be possible with Manny?s outgrowing the division. JMM needs more to fight Manny than Manny does to JMM. Hence, JMM should go up to 135 to make the trilogy probable. Who is the better fighter between Pac and JMM? Again, don?t ask Pac or JMM or any of their diehard supporters. Let Pacquiao-Marquez III at 135 clear up this still unsettled issue. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Epifanio M. Almeda. |
