Ariel Delgao Left No Room for Judging Controversy, Retains ABCO Super-Bantam Title by KO By Epifanio M. Almeda PhilBoxing.com Tue, 18 Mar 2008 ABCO super-bantamweight champion Ariel Delgado successfully defended his title by knocking out challenger Howhaan Sitkopol of Thailand with a barrage of unanswered head and body power shots last Saturday, 15 March 2008, at the Batangas Provincial Sports Complex, Batangas City, Philippines. When the referee signalled the fighters to engage, Delgado immediately stormed Sitkopol with combinations forcing the hapless challenger to back-pedal and leaving him unable to throw even a single punch. The fight ended at ?42 of the 1st round with Sitkopol still lying on his back even after the count of 10. It took sometime before Sitkopol was able to get up with assistance from the canvas. (Fight photos were taken by Paclander boxing judge Tony Venezuela.) Immediately after the previous day?s conference of ring officials at the Games and Amusements Board office, WBC-ABCO fight supervisor Anek Hongtongkam of Thailand showed his concern over the appointment of the all Filipino referee and judges who will officiate the fight. He faced the three judges (Saldy Lopez, Ric Canlas and Epie Almeda) and said that when judging the fight, the judges ?should not think of the country of the boxer but of the boxer?. Judge Canlas spoke up and assured Mr. Hongtongkam that the assigned judges are fair and do not regard a fighter?s nationality, management or reputation in judging fights. Having heard from a number of fighters of how difficult it is to win in Thailand by decision, it is wished that Mr. Hongtongkam would say the same admonition to the Thai judges when a Filipino fighter fights in Thailand. While Delgado was not present during the conference and most probably was unaware of the ABCO supervisor?s concern, he left no room for any doubt to arise by taking the matter, literally, in his own hands.
