Isaac “La Bestia” Lucero Wants to Walk in Father’s Shoes PhilBoxing.com Fri, 18 Jun 2021 We have seen it time and time again in boxing. The father is a wunderkind in the sport while the son struggles to make a name for himself years later. 22-year-old welterweight Isaac “La Bestia” Lucero (7-0, 6KO) is working hard for things to be different. He will have his next opportunity this upcoming Friday, July 25th when he jumps up to his first scheduled eight rounder against rugged veteran Agustin Lugo (11-11-3, 5KO). The fight will be part of the Jab Promotions fight card from the Grand Hotel in Tijuana, Mexico. Part of the nine-bout fight card will be televised in Latin America by ESPN’s Knockout boxing series. Growing up in the small seaside town of La Paz, Mexico, on the southern tip of Baja California, Lucero’s dad, Isaias “Bestia” Lucero Sr., is considered a local legend for his boxing career as a light heavyweight 30 years ago. Lucero Sr. for years reigned as the Mexican 175-pound champion. “In our hometown my dad was and still is considered a legend,” Lucero explained with a smile. “The town expects for my brother and I to not only get to the level my dad did but surpass it. That is one of the reasons we left La Paz, our family, our friends, and came to Tijuana.” The Lucero brothers, hard-hitting Isaias Jr and come-forward pressure fighter Isaac have been in Tijuana for the better part of two years working on their craft. “Everybody knows Tijuana is one of the most important cities in Mexico if not the world for boxing,” Isaac said. “The opportunities here are much bigger, there is more boxing, more to learn and obviously more sparring.” Before going pro on a fight card in Los Angeles, CA, in late 2019, Lucero made a name for himself in the amateurs winning three national tournaments at the elite level and competing internationally. “I want to surpass my amateur success but, in the pros, in my eyes that means a world title,” Lucero explained. “I have been a pro for only two years, I am learning every day but at the end, that is the goal, to become a world champion.” |
