Former World Title Challenger “Choko” Rodriguez Closes Up Camp PhilBoxing.com Fri, 18 Jun 2021 This week former world title challenger Abraham “Choko” Rodriguez (27-3, 13KO) is closing up his camp this week for his upcoming main event fight against the tough and rugged Alejandro “Pacquaio” Villaseñor (15-4, 6KO). The scheduled eight round strawweight contest is set for Friday, June 25th, at the Grand Hotel in Rodriguez’s hometown of Tijuana, Mexico. The event is presented by Frank Carrillo’s Jab Promotions and will be televised in Latin America by ESPN Knockout boxing series. “This has been a great camp, we are finishing up with ten rounds of sparring with Arnulfo Sandoval and others,” the 26-year-ol Rodriguez stated recently. “After my last fight I didn’t take too much time off and came back to the gym right away so I have been getting ready for this fight for the better part of three months.” Rodriguez is coming off a hard-fought loss in late February when on two days’ notice he challenged Puerto Rico’s McWilliams Arroyo for the interim WBC flyweight title on the semi-main event of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s win over Avni Yildirim in Miami, Florida. “I don’t regret taking that fight although I lost,” he explained. “It was a great experience. It proved to me that I have what it takes to compete at a high level and at such a big event. I want to get back there but in my own weight class, 105 pounds.” With a win over Villaseñor, who handed Rodriguez his first professional loss via a controversial TKO in early 2018, the Tijuana native will look for a world title opportunity in the strawweight division. “There isn’t much to say about the loss to Villaseñor, this fight is my opportunity to get revenge,” Rodriguez said. “I know the cut which led to the stoppage was a head-butt but the referee saw something else. This happens in boxing.” “I want a chance at a world title at 105 pounds,” he continued. “I know I have to get back in the win column for that to happen. That is why I am very motivated for this fight; I kill two birds with one stone with a win over Villaseñor.” |
