SPORTS SHORTS 40: ESTRADA WANTS TO KO CHOCOLATITO, BUT THE "MEXICUTIONER" IS UNFAZED

PhilBoxing.com

The four-weight division champion Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez swore to show all his talents when he fights Juan Francisco Estrada in a rematch on March 13 at the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas. The match will be a unified WBC and WBA super flyweight world title fight. Gonzalez boasts that has already accomplished all of his aims in boxing being the only four-division world boxing champion from his country Nicaragua. He surpassed the record of his mentor and idol, three-weight world champion Alexis Argüello.

"I am very happy, very happy. I think there is nothing to continue demonstrating. I feel that I have already reached the top of what I had to achieve, I reached my dream of being world champion. I am very happy because God has helped me to be where I am and I feel very satisfied with everything," said Gonzalez as quoted by Boxing Scene.

Gonzalez (50-2-0, 41 KO's), age 33 years of Managua, Nicaragua and Estrada (41-3, 28 KO's), age 30 years of Puerto Peñasco, Mexico fought for the first time on November 17, 2012. During that match Gonzalez successfully defended his WBA junior flyweight title via a twelve round unanimous decision with the scores 118-110, 116-112 and 116-112. For eight years there were negotiations for a rematch and now the second fight will finally be realized.

Estrada is not aiming for a win by points decision. He wants to end the fight before the final bell. “I am confident that I already know Chocolatito. I will be very different from the first time, since a long time has passed. I'm preparing not only to win, but to get a knockout because I don't want to leave any doubts,” Estrada told Erika Montoya.

The Nicaraguan world champion is not keen on exchange of words. "I am the type of opponent who doesn't like to talk a lot, I like to wait until the moment of the fight," said Gonzalez. Estrada wants the rematch to live up to the fans' expectations since they have been waiting for this second fight for several years. The rematch was aborted after Gonzalez was defeated twice by Srisaket Sor Rungvisai of Thailand but he recovered and grabbed the WBA title by way of knockout of the previously unbeaten Kal Yafai of England.

Canelo Alvarez is in a quandary as to the date of his next bout when another May event in Las Vegas is on the sked for the Mexican. Per World Boxing News, Canelo (54-1-2, 36 KOs), age 30 years of Guadalajara, Mexico is scheduling a fight with Billy Joe Saunders on Cinco de Mayo. The problem with Cinco de Mayo is that it falls on a midweek or Wednesday and Canelo has to choose whether to fight on May 1st or May 8th, on a weekend, in the entertainment capital of the world.

Canelo will decide on the actual day he will finally face Billy Joe Saunders (30-0, 14 KOs), age 31 of Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England. Both boxers had originally been scheduled to clash on May 2, 2020, but coronavirus pandemic aborted the fight. On December 19, 2020 in a unification bout for the WBA and vacant WBC super middleweight titles in San Antonio, Texas, Álvarez won by unanimous decision over Callum Smith. Saunders defeated Martin Murray on December 4, 2020 and retained WBO super middleweight title by unanimous decision. Canelo has a mandatory defense against Avni Yildirim (21-2, 12 KOs), age 29 years of Sivas, Turkey on February 27. Álvarez is expected to win easily then fight Saunders.

This happened on the second successive set without star Donovan Mitchell who rested due to concussion and key reserve Derrick Favors with back soreness. Rudy Gobert piled up season highs 29 points and 20 rebounds, and Jordan Clarkson came off the bench to torch the Mavericks with a game-high 31 points. Joe Ingles contributed a season-high 21 points, sinking in seven 3-pointers, and handingy eight assists.
