MAYOL REMAINS UNPAID BY KONCZ! By Anthony 'Duljoman' Andales PhilBoxing.com Thu, 14 Feb 2008 DETROIT -- Rodel Mayol, the pride of Mandaue City, fought last Saturday in Guanajuato, Mexico because he was promised by Michael Koncz to face Omar Nino for the Light Flyweight WBC eliminator or an outright challenge to WBC Light Flyweight Edgar Sosa in April. Contrary to earlier reports that Mayol didn't train properly for this fight, Mayol called this writer via long distance and said that he really prepared for this fight motivated for the chance to challenge the world champion. The problem was, when he went for the weigh-in, he went into the scales without his opponent who reportedly backed out. The night before the fight, Koncz told him that they can easily look for replacement since they're in Mexico and there are a lot of fighters available. This fight is supposedly a tune-up fight for Mayol. But what happened was the replacement was a legitimate flyweight. His name was Adrian Hernandez, undefeated in 11 fights with 9 KOs. Mayol told this writer that this Adrian is an up and coming fighter in Mexico, and he was groomed to be a legitimate contender. So Mayol asked Koncz, if he is one of their up and coming fighter, why are they trying to match Hernandez with him? In other words, Mayol was supposed to fight a tune-up while the up-and-coming Hernandez was supposed to have a gimme fight too. Around 10pm last Friday Aljoe Jaro (Bernabe Concepcion's manager) told Mayol that he will not fight Hernandez because Hernandez is fighting another opponent. Jaro told Mayol that a 10wins 4losses unknown fighter will fight him on Saturday. Batang Mandaue was still confused as to who he really had to fight the following day. On fight night, at the arena, Mayol was informed that he will fight the bigger Hernandez. Mayol was shocked but he can't do nothing. He told me that "unsa nanalaw tah?" ("What? Are we afraid?"). During the weigh-in Mayol, weighed 110lbs, but Hernandez's weight is a big question mark. Team Mayol didn't know how much Hernandez weighed. But still Koncz pushed Mayol to take this fight. Being a legitimate flyweight and considering this is not a world championship fight, I'd say Hernandez's weight was around 115lbs. Naturally bigger and 5 lbs heavier, our very own Mayol was in a disadvantage again. Rodel told me that he didn't mind fighting anybody as long as it is fair. "I didn't fight because my wife is pregnant, I didn't fight because of the money, I fought last Saturday hoping to have a shot for Edgar Sosa in April as what Koncz promised," Rodel said. "I just wanted to let everybody know that I did my best, and I prepared for the fight. I'm not trying to sourgrape but I am confused, I'm not mentally relaxed and all the distractions took their toll on fight night," added Mayol. As of presstime, Rodel has yet to see the fight contract and Koncz told him that he would receive his purse last Monday. He asked him yesterday, but Koncz told him to wait until the next day. I've seen this movie before. Isn't this the same Koncz who also made so much delay in paying Bernabe Concepcion in his recent fight? Manny Pacquiao to the rescue. Manny called Arum and told him Rodel's plight in Mexico. Manny assured Rodel that they will settle all the scores next time. Kumbatea!
