SEN. PACQUIAO HIRES YANO AS MILITARY CONSULTANT By Aquiles Z. Zonio PhilBoxing.com Thu, 08 Aug 2019 SENATE ? Senator Manny Pacquiao on Tuesday hired as military consultant retired Armed Forces Chief of Staff Gen. Alexander Yano. The bond between Pacquiao and Yano started way back in late 2003 when the latter invited the boxing icon to distribute relief goods to displaced Moro families in Palimbang town, Sultan Kudarat. Pacquiao, who just arrived then from the US where he posted a spectacular win against Mexican boxing legend Marco Antonio Barrera, readily accepted the invitation. Pacquiao?s victory against Barrera catapulted the Pinoy boxing hero to the pedestal of boxing immortality. Pacquiao?s presence and generosity lifted the sagging spirit of the Moro evacuees who temporarily took shelter in makeshift tents to avoid being caught in the crossfire between government forces and the Abu Sayyaf bandits. Pacquiao?s attendance also boosted the morale of Army troops pursuing the extremist Abu Sayyaf members who sneaked in and tried to establish base in the area. Yano was then the brigade commander of the Army?s 601st Infantry Brigade operating in South Cotabato-Sultan Kudarat-Sarangani-General Santos (Socsksargen) area. It was Yano who helped facilitate the enlistment of Pacquiao into the Army Reserve force when he was still the commanding general of the Philippine Army in 2007. The senator from Mindanao is now a full-fledged colonel in the Army Reserve Command. ?I took him (Yano) in because of his competence, integrity and track record in the military service. I believe, he can be of great help particularly in crafting laws related to national security,? Pacquiao said. Yano was the 37th Chief of Staff of the AFP and the first ever Mindanao-born military officer to occupy the highest position in the AFP hierarchy. Photo: Sen.
