DUNO FIGHTS AVILES ON SEPTEMBER 29 AT INDIO, CALIFORNIA

PhilBoxing.com

Filipino hard puncher Romero ?Ruthless? Duno (17-1, 14 KOs) returns to the ring as he faces Ezequiel Aviles (16-2-3, 6 KOs) for the WBC youth lightweight championship on September 29 at the Fantasy Springs Resort in Indio, California.

Ezequiel "Sheke" Aviles is from Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico. He lost to countryman Oliver Quintana for the interim World Boxing Council FECARBOX superlightweight title by 10th round TKO. His other loss was dealt by another Mexican Sergio Ortega by split decision.

Duno has been training under the tutelage former WBC world light flyweight champion Rodel Mayor in Los Angeles, California. His career shone and made it big in the United States after a stoppage of previously undefeated American Christian Gonzales in a major upset for the vacant World Boxing Council youth intercontinental lightweight title. He floored Gonzales twice enroute to a second-round knockout.

?I want to thank Golden Boy and Sanman Boxing for another great opportunity. I trained so hard for this fight. I am focused on winning and winning in order to get to the bigger fights. After winning this, I want to face either Linares or Ryan Garcia or any other big name in my division. I want to show the world that I?m ready to be a world champion," Duno stated.

During his last fight, Duno overshadowed Gilberto Gonzalez via unanimous decision at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California last May 17. The 10-round lightweight contest win was his 8th consecutive victory. Gonzalez also lost to another Filipino Mercito Gesta in 2017 via unanimous decision.

In his US debut on March 2017, he impressed the US boxing media with the stoppage of Christian Gonzalez. After that, he scored technical knockout win over countryman Jason Tinampay in his hometown. He then won over Juan Pablo Sanchez by unanimous decision and racked up an awesome first-round KO over Yardley Armenta Cruz last January, both fights held in the US.

"I'm happy to comeback and make my way to a title fight. I've been working very hard and I'm very prepared for the victory. I'm excited to come back to Fantasy Springs again to score a great victory," Duno said.

At the main event, former three-division world champion Jorge "El Ni?o de Oro" Linares (44-4, 27 KOs) will engage in a 12-round bout against Abner "Pin" Cotto (23-3, 12 KOs) in the main event of the September 29 edition of Golden Boy Fight Night at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California. "I've prepared very well for this fight. I'm training with Jorge Zerpa for this fight," said Linares.

Linares said Zerpa is not a new trainer and they were together 11 years ago when he fought for his first world title against Oscar "El Chololo" Larios in Las Vegas. He added that they were working on a lot of things, but mostly they have been reviewing and going back to an old school style of training. He said he is not changing his style, and just adding some things.

Vasiliy Lomachenko, the WBA (Super) lightweight title holder will attempt to unify the division world titles for the first time when he faces WBO champion Jose ?Sniper? Pedraza on December 8 at the Madison Square Garden. This will be Lomachenko?s fourth main event appearance at the New York City venue.

?Boxing fans are excited that Vasiliy Lomachenko will be back in action on Dec. 8,? said Top Rank CEO Bob Arum. ?He knows that in WBO champion Jose Pedraza, he faces a tough opponent."

Lomachenko is considered by several experts to be the greatest amateur boxer in history with a 396-1 record winning Olympic gold medals for Ukraine in 2008 in Beijing and 2012 in London. Lomachenko tied a historic boxing record by winning a world title in his third professional bout on June 21, 2014, which a very convincing unanimous decision win over Gary Russell Jr. to grab the vacant WBO featherweight title.

WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman told BoxingScene.com the organization's stand when asked what would happen to fighters such as Danny Garcia and Shawn Porter who have been trained by their fathers for their entire boxing career. Other fighters whose fathers were their trainers include Floyd Mayweather, Shane Mosley, Vasyl Lomachenko, Zab Judah, among others. The WBC has some policies of a potential mental conflict that a fighter will continue to push himself, even with his health at risk, because his father is in the corner.

"That is a situation that we cannot be unfair and we cannot interfere in a fighter's career. Both Porter and Garcia have been trained by their fathers since they were kids. Our point is to make a long term resolution because some of the tragedies that have happened in the ring - most of them have happened with the father in the corner," Sulaiman told BoxingScene.com.

Sulaiman added that when a father is looking after his child on a soccer field, in school, in dance, and whatever he does in life, he feels much pressure as a kid. The kid doesn't want to let down his father so fighters will go into inhumane situations because of the pressure of having their father in the corner. "It is something that we have been studying. We are doing interviews and research and it is just a situation that we are looking at," he concluded.
