OBSTACLES TO GORRES-DARCHINYAN CLEARED By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 20 Nov 2007 IBF Championship Committee chairman Lindsey Tucker Jr has informed Viva Sports/Manila Standard Today that the super flyweight title eliminator between Z ?The Dream? Gorres and IBO champion Vic Darchinyan has cleared the last obstacle and will take place on February 2. Tucker said that he had received the signed contract of Gorres and that Gary Shaw Productions ?agreed to Vic Darchinyan?s contract? which removed all obstacles to staging the fight in the Philippines. Tucker announced that as a result he would ?cancel the purse bid scheduled for tomorrow.? Earlier, Tucker told us he hadn?t received either the contract of Gorres or the approval of Gary Shaw Productions who is Darchinyan?s promoter and until he did, the purse bid was pushing ahead. However, now that the contracts are in and Shaw posed no objections the eliminator will push through. Initially there was also a hitch concerning the gloves to be used by both fighters with the Gorres camp insisting on Everlast gloves. However, they eventually agreed to let Darchinyan use Cleto Reyes gloves which are considered ?puncher?s gloves? and followed the Nevada State Athletic Commission rule that allows a fighter to use the gloves of his choice. ALA Gym?s Michael Aldeguer has announced that the fight would be held in Cebu either at the Cebu City Sports Complex where the Gorres-Fernando Montiel WBO title fight was held or at the plush Waterfront Hotel. When a purse bid was announced the Darchinyan camp had bragged that they had a consortium that would make an offer which would guarantee that the eliminator will be staged in Sydney. Apparently it was all hype and they settled for the offer from the Gorres handlers which they claimed was a good one that they couldn?t turn down.
