SUELO, MASCARINAS, PACIENCIA, BITOON OFF TO GOOD START IN SINGAPORE CHESS TOURNEY

SINGAPORE---ARENA GRANDMASTER (AGM) and Fide Master elect Roberto Suelo Jr., International Master Rico Yap Mascarinas, International Master Enrique Paciencia and Jimson Bitoon are off to a blazing start by posting victories in the opening round of the SCF HP Invitational Training League (Standard Time Control) on Saturday here at the Singapore Chess Federation headquarter in Bishan Street in Singapore.

Suelo, a former top player of Barangay, Malamig Rizal Technological University in Mandaluyong City defeated Zhengyong Jayden Wong after 43 moves of French Defense, while the Cebu ace Mascarinas subdued Sheng Feng Ng in their Gruenfeld encounter.

?The first round is one of the toughest rounds in any tournament. It usually sets the tone of how you?re going to perform,? said Singapore based Ronnie Tamares, another top bet of former multi-titled Barangay Malamig Rizal Technological University chess team who watched the game.

"We hope to perform well in this event and gain some ElO rating points," Suelo, an active member of the International Churches of Christ (ICOC) in Singapore said for his part.

The Tacloban native Paciencia who will represent Singapore Chess Team in the upcoming Batumi, Georgia World Chess Olympiad, bested Candidate Master Cyrus Nisban in their Nimzo-Indian duel while Jimson, nephew of US based Grandmaster Richard Bitoon scalped Xuan Rui Ethan Poh in their another French skirmish.

International Arbiter Lincoln "Linky" Yap of Cebu, Christopher Diaz of Negros Occidental, Jomel Ortiz of Manila and Fide Master Andrean Susilodinata of Indonesia also opened with wins.
Yap outplayed Michael Yeoh Seong Jui, Diaz crushed Fang Kun, Ortiz dealt Jiang Youhan while Susilodinata defeated Woman International Master Gong Qianyun of Singapore.

Filipino and United States chess master Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr. failed to convert his winning position in the bishop pawn endgame and ended his game into a fighting draw against Joel Yi Herng Ong after 64 moves of English Opening.(Marlon Bernardino).
