MAASIN CITY -- All the first five fights on the Pinoy Pride 44: Laban sa Leyte card ended in knockouts at the Maasin City Gym here Saturday night.

In a rough bantamweight power struggle, former world-title challenger ?King? Arthur Villanueva (32-3-0, 18KOs) of Bacolod City crushed fellow Pinoy Renren Tesorio (16-13-3, 4KOs) during seven rounds to force the boxer of the Penalosa boxing stable to surrender at the 1:42 seconds mark of the 7th round. Jerusalem drops Cuerdo.

ALA Gym's former world title challenger Melvin Jerusalem (13-2-0, 8 KOs) of Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon made good use of his superior boxing skills to land damaging blows to the head and body of Philip Luis Cuerdo (10-5-1, 4 KOs) of Mandaluyong City to stop him in round eight via TKO. Crushing body shots in the eighth chapter, followed by tough combinations rocked the brave Cuerdo of the Penalosa Gym to the canvas where he stayed seated near a neutral corner, prompting veteran referee Teddy Alivio to wave the fight off at the 1:12 mark of round TKO 8. Jerusalem had in his corner ALA coach Michael Domingo.

Go Hosaka downs Quinones.

Debutant Filipino-Japanese Go Hosaka (1-0, 1 KO) sporting the flags of Japan and the Philippines in his trunks did not waste any time in attacking and brutalizing unheralded Holly Quinones (3-10-1, 1KOs), dismantling in in the very first round for a quick KO win. The official time of stoppage was 2:47 in round one. Referee was Nic Banal of Banawa, Cebu.

Formentera drops Bayo.

In flyweights Joyjoy Fomentera (9-3-0, 5 KOs) of Cebu City punished Lobert Bayo (7-8-0, 0KOs) of Mandaue City with damaging combinations for which Bayo had no answer. A brutal left from Fomentera stopped Bayo at the 49 seconds mark of the third round. The third man was Teddy Alivio.

Antaran upsets Macapobre.

In the first clash of the evening, Carlito Antaran (2-3-1, 1KOs) of Sarangani needed only two rounds to ravage Jeno Macapobre (3-1-0, 2KOs) of Toledo City to score a second round TKO, Antaran dropped Macapobre twice in the opening stanza, finishing him off with a brutal left hook to the jaw of the Sarangani boxer who falls flat on his back near his own corner.
