MEXICAN CHAMP SAMMY GUTIERREZ IS DONNIE NIETES' CHALLENGER
PhilBoxing.com Tue, 06 Nov 2007

WBO Vice-President for Asia Pacific Leon Panoncillo has named Mexican Sammy Gutierrez as the next challenger of WBO minimumweight champion Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes for his first voluntary defense.
The choice of the highly-rated Gutierrez (WBO No. 4) came from the WBO championship committee and was approved by its President Paco Valcarclel, as relayed by Panoncillo to Nietes' manager, Michael Aldeguer.
The 21-year old Gutierrez is a fearsome warrior from Puebla, an eastern state of Mexico City. He parades a record of 19 wins in 23 fights with two losses and two draws with 13 knockout victories. He is the reigning Mexican minimumweight champ, grabbing the title from Gabriel Ramirez through a split decision on August 31 in Deportivo Corona, La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico. He has defended the crown successfully three times since he took it from Jose Ortiz on October 21, 2005.
The Nietes-Gutierrez matchup will be another slam-bang affair that might be staged in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, the hometown of Nietes. Nietes trained in Bacolod City under the tutelage of his uncle Jerson in 1998 before he left for Cebu City and found his boxing home under the roof of ALA Boxing Gym of boxing patron Antonio ?Tony? Aldeguer.
In a career spanning almost five years, Nietes built a stellar record of 22 wins, one loss, and three draws, 14 won by way of knockout. He won the WBO Asia Pacific minimumweight title on November 24, 2006 and successfully defended it twice against Thongthailek Por Vorasing and Sangpetch Sor Sakuphan, both from Thailand.
On September 7 this year, he fought Pornsawan Kratingdaenggym and took the vacant WBO minimumweight title via unanimous decision, fulfilling what Filipinos have dreamed to get a 4th world title for the year. Nietes also became the 33rd Filipino boxer to become a world champion.
The Nietes camp, headed by the young Aldeguer will start negotiating for the probable date in February of next year. A strong supporting cast will be lined up with some promising boxers from the renowned ALA Boxing Gym stable of prizefighters. (PR)
