ENKWENTRO SA NAGA: SALUDAR BROS, PARADERO WIN (PHOTOS)

PhilBoxing.com

City of Naga, Cebu ? Brothers Vic and Froilan Saludar and Robert Paradero successfully defeated their respective return bout opponents at the Enan Chiong Activity Center here well past midnight Saturday in an event that started very late due to a monstrous traffic jam that hit several southern Cebu towns which delayed the arrival of boxers and officials to this industrial city.

In the main event for 10-round minimumweight, former world title challenger Vic Saludar won by unanimous decision over former foe Lito Dante in a fight that Saludar failed to totally control. Although Saludar put at bay Dante with his jabs and combinations, the shorter Dante had his moments throughout the night by tagging Saludar with hard looping rights. Dante was cut on his left eyebrow in the fifth round ruled as a headbutt by veteran referee Danrex Tapdasan which Saludar tried to capitalize by targeting this with his stiff rights.

In the end Saludar got the better in the scorecards winning 97 to 93 from judges Edward Ligas and Edgar Olalo and 98 to 96 from judge Arnel Pasion. Saludar was more dominant in their first meeting on April 2, 2016 winning by wide unanimous decision. Vic Saludar, ranked No. 2 by the WBO in the minimumweight division, now improves his record to 16 wins with three loses and is expected to crash into the WBC rankings after defeating the WBC No. 15 ranked Dante who dropped to 14-9-4, 7KOs.

Froilan Saludar (L) sends Rogen Flores to the seat of his pants moments after the opening bell.

In the co-featured matchup, Vic's older brother Froilan Saludar (27-2-1, 18KOs), a veteran of many high quality fights, made short work of the Rogen Flores (14-40-6, 7KOs) stopping the overmatched Flores by TKO at 1:59 in the very first round. Saludar sent Flores to the canvas with a right straight to the face seconds from the opening bell and finished him up with a left to the body a little bit later. After being hit with the vicious body shot, Flores grimaced in pain and turned around forcing referee Tony Pesons to waved off the contest. Saludar also stopped Flores in their first meeting on April 12, 2014 by second round TKO.

Robert Paradero (C) waits in a neutral corner as his opponent Ian Lugatan struggles to get up.

In the other co-featured matchup scheduled for 10 rounds in the minimumweight division, WBO No. 1 ranked Robert 'Kapitan Inggo' Paradero knocked out former foe Ian Lugatan in the second round with a body shot scoring the first stoppage of the night. Paradero was too shifty against Lugatan whom he already beat by decision in their first meeting on April 2, 2016 in General Santos City. Paradero also showcased his power by that body shot sending Lugatan to the seat of his pants and unable to beat referee Teddy Alivio's count. Paradero thus upped his undefeated record to 16 wins with 11 knockouts and is now looking forward to face No. 3 ranked Janiel River of Puerto Rico for the right to become the mandatory challenger of world champion Ryura Yamanaka of Japan.

In undercard bouts, three undefeated fighters from Omega Boxing Gym remain undefeated.

Mangubat attacks Quimbo.

Featherweight prospect Tomjune Mangubat (9-0-0, 8KOs) of Bukidnon saw his knockout streak broken when he failed to stopped Jhun Ryan Quimbo (6-16-2, 0KOs) of Cebu city in their 8-round scheduled junior middleweight bout. The rangy Mangubat was fitted against way overweight Quimbo, a late replacement, who stepped the scales Friday at 154 lbs. Mangubat though still dominated Quimbo winning by unanimous decision with scores of 80-72, 80-72 and 78-74.

Mark Vecelles wins.

Mark Vicelles of Cebu City also upped his undefeated record to 6 wins (1 draw) by defeating Ernesto Alera (4-5-1, 0KOs) by unanimous with scores of 60-54, 60-54 and 59-55.

Marjun Piencenaves (L) and Jeffrey Stella mix it up.

In a highly entertaining fight scheduled for 4 rounds in the super bantamweight, Marjun Piencenaves (4-0-1, 3KOs) of Cebu City fought to a draw against Jeffrey Stella (4-4-2, 4KOs) of Mandaue City. The two exchanged bombs in the middle of the ring all night with neither one intended to back out. In the end the judges saw the fight even-steven with judge Edward Ligas had it 58-56 for Stella, judge Noel Flores had it 58-56 for Piencenavies and Edgar Olalo had 57-57 draw.

In the curtain raiser, Cristoval Furog (2-0-0, 0KOs) of Sultan Kudarat won by unanimous decision over Jeco Suico (1-2-0, 1KO) of Cebu City with scores of 39-37, 39-37 and 40-36.

Vanjune Saludar's fight with Luis Espina was canceled after Espina, who hails from Dipolog, failed to arrive in Cebu due to a storm disturbance in that part of the country. Saludar instead fought a 4-round exhibition match against an Omega Gym fighter.

The event dubbed as 'Enkwentro Dinhi sa Naga: The Rematch' was a Championship Boxing Development promotion in association with Omega Pro-Sports International and hosted by the City of Naga. The first bout was supposed to start at 6:00 p.m. but started past 10:00 p.m. after the officials and boxers, who came from Cebu City, failed to arrive on time due to a monstrous traffic jam all the way from Cebu City to Naga, partly due to people from the city going back to the provincial towns for the Christmas holidays and partly due to the inept town officials for failing to control the traffic flow, had people made to negotiate the 23 kilometer Cebu City to Naga distance for up to 6 hours from the usual 1 hour or less.
