PACQUIAO OPENS BOXING ACADEMY IN CHINA

PhilBoxing.com

BEIJING ? In what Chinese officials described as a major milestone in China's boxing history, Philippine senator and boxing legend Manny Pacquiao has officially launched the Manny Pacquiao International Boxing Academy in China during a formal ceremony at the Daioyutai Hotel here Saturday which could potentially change the boxing landscape in this economic powerhouse nation.

The ceremony, attended by Chinese dignitaries, also saw Pacquiao signed a comprehensive agreement with his Chinese partner Vincent Zhou of Dancing Sports that promised to bring boxing in China to the highest level as well as forging of a closer tie between China and the Philippines which is a major thrust of Chinese president Xi Jingpin's Belt and Road program that aims to connect and develop Asian and European countries.

Pacquiao, who is in Beijing to attend the Chinese Communist Party's 'World Political Parties Dialogue' which was attended by representatives from more than two hundred countries, expressed deep admiration to President Xi during his speech at the signing ceremony whom he described as ?visionary and brilliant?.

?Yesterday, I met with President Xi and Prime Minister Li Keqiang, and I am glad that the high level relationship between China and the Philippines is going further,? Pacquiao said. ?President Xi's Belt and Road initiative is very important, it will help countries along exchanges and cooperation at all levels across borders. It is not difficult to see that the signing of this comprehensive agreement is exactly the implementation of the two top leadership initiatives of China and an important action to promote cooperation between China and the Philippines.?

Vincent Zhou, for his part, has outlined four steps to make China a boxing powerhouse. These are 1) professionalize 2) popularize 3) industrialize and 4) internationalize. With these yardsticks, Zhou and Pacquiao will open boxing academies all over China; put up the best boxing equipment in its gyms; provide high level training by assigning highly qualified boxing trainers; by capitalizing on Pacquiao's popularity, widely promote the boxing academy to attract more Chinese youths to go into boxing; and to schedule regular boxing events all over China to eventually produce elite Chinese boxers.

Last September 29, Zhou's Dancing Sports and Pacquiao held its first boxing event headlined by Zhou's light flyweight prospect Lu Bin who won the vacant WBC Asian Boxing Council Silver in his very debut by stopping Wanchai Nianghansa of Thailand in the 3rd round in their 10-round scheduled fight. Also featured on the card were undefeated Chinese boxers Jin Xiang Pan and Ya Hung Yu as well as Filipino prospects Mark Anthony Barriga, Ronnie Baldonado, Genesis Libranza and Jayar Inson.

Bouyed by the successful event of Sep. 29, Zhou went to the Philippines the 2nd week of November to hammer the comprehensive agreement with Pacquiao.

Among the Chinese dignitaries who were in attendance during the launching and signing ceremony included Feng Hope, secretary general of the Information Office of the State Council; Zou Yan, deputy director of the Department of the Ministry of Justice; Zhang Hong, secretary of the party committee of the Chinese Film Association; He Zhewen, director of the Anti-Doping Center of the State Sports General Administration; Zhang Wei, vice-president of the Beijing Sports University and director of the Sports Industry Office of the National Development and Reform Commission; Wang Guojun, head coach of China National Boxing Team; and Wang Tongzhou, general manager of China Energy Conservation and Environmental Protection Group.
