Phl chessers blitz to 19 golds in ASEAN Age Group tilt

THE Philippine chess team won 19 gold medals at the close of the standard event Thursday, and expects to win more in the rapid and blitz events starting today in the 18th ASEAN Age Group Chess Championship being held at the Grand Darul Makmur Hotel in Kuantan, Pahang, Malaysia.

Woman Candidate Master Kylen Joy Mordido, Jerlyn Mae San Diego, Michael Concio Jr. and Daniel Quizon, the pride of Dasmarinas, Cavite head the list of gold medallist that includes Al Basher-Buto of Pasig City, Kaye Lalaine Regidor of Sta. Rosa, Mecel Angela Gadut of Candon City, Ruelle Canino of Cagayan de Oro City, Venice Vicente of Manila, Jeth Romy Morado of Quezon City and Brylle Gever Vinluan of Baguio City won individual gold medals even as Team Philippines also added 10 silvers and 5 bronze medals.

Mordido, whose stint here is being supported by Dasmarinas, Cavite mayor Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr. and fourth district Cavite representative Jenny Barzaga, toppled Syed Adnan Sharifah Nur Izzat of Malaysia in the eight and final round to finish with an unbeaten record of 7.5 points, 2.0 points a point ahead of Ho Chen Ee of Malaysia, WFM Christine Elisabeth of Indonesia and compatriot Queenie Mae Samarita of General Trias, Cavite.

Mordido, Samarita and Bea Mendoza of Baguio City combined scores of 18.0 also gave them the team gold in the Girls 16 and under.
San Diego, another protege of husband and wife Dasmarinas, Cavite mayor Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr. and fourth district Cavite representative Jenny Barzaga, subdued Vidhya Mahindran of Malaysia, to raise her total 7.0 points in the Girls 12 and under after eight games of play, the same output of Laysa Latifah of Indonesia, who brought downed Zhiwei Ong of Malaysia. San Diego and Mahindran, both won the gold medal while Krisen Yochabel Marie Sanchez of Cebu took the silver with 5.5 points, the same score of Samantha Babol Umayan of Davao City who got a bronze.

San Diego, Sanchez and Umayan took the gold in the standard team with a total scores of 18.0 points.

Concio, on the other hand won the Boys 12 and under who tote 7.5 points. Budhidharma Nayaka of Indonesia took the silver with 7.0 points. Mark Jay Bacojo of Dasmarinas, Cavite and Gabriel John Umayan of Davao City won the bronze medal with 6.0 points each. Concio, Bacojo and Umayan also won the team event in the Boys 12 and under with a total scores of 19.5 points.

Quizon, meantime won the Boys 14 and under crown with 6.5 points. He joined Justine Diego Mordido of Dasmarinas, Cavite (5.5 pts) and Jave Mareck Peteros (4.5 pts) winning the team gold with a combined scores of 17.0 points.

Much known"Basty" in the chess world, Al Basher Buto produced the country's first gold medal in the Boys 8 and under. Buto, a grade 2 pupil of Faith Christian School finished undefeated with 7.5 points. He joined Vincent Ryu Dimayuga of Batangas and Ruslan Pamplona of Passi, Iloilo, both tallied 5.0 points each for the team gold.

In the Girls 8 and under, Kaye Lalaine Regidor of Sta. Rosa, Mecel Angela Gadut of Candon City, and Jirah Floravie Cutiyog of General Santos City won the team gold with 20.0 points output. Regidor and Gadut, both tallied 7.0 points for the individual gold while Cutiyog registered 6.0 points for the silver.

In the Girls 10 and under, Canino won the medal with 7.0 points. Daren dela Cruz of Dasmarinas, Cavite and Antonella Berthe Racasa of Marikina City took the silver medal with 6.5 points each. Canino, Dela Cruz and Racasa won the team gold amazed a total 20.0 points output.

Vicente, meanwhile lording the Girls 20 and under with 6.5 points for the gold. Ynna Sophia Canape of Marikina City took the silver with 6.0 points followed by WFM Allaney Jia Doroy of Surigao del Sur who won medal with 5.5 points. They also took the team gold.

Morado, the shell national youth active chess grand champion won the gold medal in the Boys 20 and under with 6.0 points, the same output of FM Kurniawan Muhamad Agus of Indonesia and Gever who also won gold medal. National coach Roel Abelgas is very confident that more medals is coming for Team Philippines when the rapid and blitz play gets underway. In the 50 years old, senior division, National Masters Alex Milagrosa, Wilfredo Neri and Edmundo Gatus tallied 5.5 points for the gold.
