TOOMEY'S TIME: Is the Super8 title heading back to Dubbo? PhilBoxing.com Mon, 30 Oct 2017 Robert Toomey. DUBBO'S ROBERT TOOMEY EYES OFF SUPER8 TITLE DUBBO'S ROBERT 'GUMMY' TOOMEY HOPES TO CONTINUE HIS GOOD RECORD in Queensland when he lines up in the Super8 at Rumours International on November 25 on the TGW & SMITHY BRINGS THE BIG FIGHTS 18 card. In twenty three fight career Toomey has fought in Queensland five times for four wins - ironically the one loss was dropping a majority points decision at the hands of fellow super8 contender Jason Kanofski. The sunshine state has been a happy hunting ground, but the prospect of the Super8 tournament presents a whole new challenge. In order to maintain his strong record in Queensland he needs to win three fights in the one night - if he can do that he'll pick up the title of Super8 champion and a first prize cheque of $20,000. "For me it's about the challenge, not so much the money," Toomey said. "I like the challenge, I like the concept it's something different and a huge attraction for fighters and fans and I want to be a part of something like that. "The draw is going to play a massive part, who you draw in the first round is crucial, the fights will be nice and fast and experience will play a big role. "Full respect to everyone who has put their hands up, all eight blokes are champions so may the best man win. "You've got young fighters, older guys who have been there and done it, you've got guys who haven't fought for a few years so it's a good mix." Toomey brings to Toowoomba a strong resume. At his most recent bout he won the IBO Oceania title. He's held the Australian and New South Wales State titles. He's won 7 of his last 9 bouts - his two losses a unanimous points defeat at the hands of undefeated World rated George Kambosis and the highly regarded Valentine Borg. Toomey has also been the distance with the likes of Samuel Columban and Junior Talipeau. "I haven't fought for two years but I've always been in the gym, sparring a lot of fighters in the lead up to their bouts, recently I was sparring Wade Ryan who went the distance with Tim Tszyu and had him on the canvas in round one. "I haven't been inactive, I've been training for two years waiting for the right opportunity. "I've never been to Toowoomba, looking forward to it actually and we've got a big crowd coming up to support me, we're counting down." The 8 confirmed competitors are Jack Asis - former IBO World Champion. Jamie Hilt - Queensland Welterweight champion Jonathan Tuhu - Multiple Muay thai and kick boxing champion Mick Shaw - Former Australian Champion Ya Jie Ding - Chinese rising star Luke Woods - Commonwelth Games amateur, 3-0 as a pro Robert Toomey - Former IBO Oceania Champion Jason Kanofski - Former Queensland Champion "I think I'll win it, that's just my opinion but I've got to prove it and I'm willing to prove it on the night," Toomey said. |
