Antonio, Montoya Take Share of Lead in Bacolod Chess PhilBoxing.com Fri, 13 Oct 2017 BACOLOD CITY--Filipino Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. zoomed to his third straight win and took a share of the lead with unknown Edsel Montoya in the thrid round of the Piaya Network 2017 Negros International Open Chess tournament at the Ikthus Osbron Hall here. Flashing his brilliant, attacking form, Antonio sacrificed material early in the black side of his pet Caro-Kann and forced young Merben Roque to resign after 48 moves. Not to be outdone, the 33-year-old Montoya, a native of La Carlota City in Negros, shocked second seed GM Karen Grigoryan of Armenia in a marathon 95-move Sicilian Dragon game as the locals made a strong statement to keep the title in the face of a strong local field. Antonio and Montoya battle each other for solo leadership today as upsets continued to be set in this nine-round Swiss system event bankrolled by Piaya Network and owner Tony Aguirre. Top seed Nigel Short of England was forced to a draw by International Master Minh Thang Tran in a Queen's Gambit game. Tran, a 17-year-old prospect from Vietnam, forced a repetition of moves. Tran joined Short in a share of third to seventh spot with Indian GM Srinath Narayanan, GM Nguyen Duc Hoa and IM Chito Garma, among others. Garma, the 53-year-old veteran, drew with the fifth seed Nguyen in a marathon rook and pawns endgame even as Danmaersk Mangao upset IM Oliver Dimakiling to score his second win. Mangao also has 2.5 points. The star-studded event also saw 14-year-old Daniel Quizon force a draw against fellow Filipino GM Darwin Laylo to lead others with two points which included IM Ronald Dableo, NM Elwin Retanal, Rey Jomar Magallanes, Jayson Salubre and Emmanuel Emperado. Also with two points were unheralded Ellan Asuela, who forced a draw with third seed Tuan Minh Tran of Vietnam. Tran has 1.5 points after he lost to Roque in the second round. ![]() |
