Tepora retraces amateur roots in preparing for his biggest challenge PhilBoxing.com Sat, 09 Sep 2017 ![]() Undefeated Pinoy boxing prospect Jhack Tepora is touching base with his amateur roots as he prepares for the biggest fight of his career on Sept. 23 in East London, South Africa. Tepora, who is undefeated in 20 fights, is training with the Philippine boxing team in Baguio to prepare for his challenge against Lusanda Komanisi for the WBO international featherweight title. "He's been in Baguio for more than a week now and he is training with his former teammates of the national team," said OPSI vice president Jerome Calatrava. Before turning pro in 2012, Tepora was a member of the national team and even won in two international meets. "He's also been sparring with the members of the national team and they are quite good," said Calatrava. Tepora, who is accompannied by three trainers in his Baguio training camp, needs all the help he can get as not only will he be climbing to the featherweight division (126 pounds), he will also be fighting abroad for the first time. The 5-foot-6 and 24-year-old southpaw has stopped 15 of his 20 foes but all of his fights were held in the Philippines, mostly in Cebu. His last outing was a 76-second workout against an overmatched Yon Armed in his first defense of the WBO Oriental super bantamweight belt. Though he has fought as a featherweight two years before, Tepora has campaigned exclusively in the super bantamweight division (122 pounds) since stopping Jason Egera in the first round last Sept. 12, 2015. Though he will be fighting abroad for the first time, one thing that could tip the scale in Tepora's favor is ring rust as Komanisi will be fighting in just his second fight in two years. The 27-year-old African known as "School Boy" last fought against Tello Dithebe, whom he stopped in just two rounds. Before that fight, Komanisi, who is 21-3 with 18 KOs, had back-to-back fights against Pinoy Rolly Gasca. He had a contentious split decision win over Gasca in Dec. 15 2014 and knocked the Filipino out in just five rounds in their rematch on Oct. 16, 2015 before going inactive for almost two years. ![]() |
