THE VIKINGS & BARBARIANS ARE COMING

PhilBoxing.com

TGW & Smithy present Super Sunday 1, Sept 17

BY DAY THEY'RE BUILDERS, BANKERS, HAIR DRESSERS, OFFICE STAFF, TRADIES, ENGINEERS but come September 17 they'll be Vikings and Barbarians! 10 men and 4 women will jump between the ropes for three rounds competing for the inaugural Viking Barbarian Cup.

Seven fighters make up team Barbarian, seven fighters make up team Viking - they'll square off and the team that wins the most bouts will be crowned the champions.

They're currently in week five of a six week training camp.

"Team Barbarian has been a great experience not only for the fighters but for myself," Barbarians Coach Corban Kanoveilomani said.

"The team spirit has been incredible and I'm so proud of everyone in the team, they've come along way since day one of camp.

"There is some real talent in the team and anyone coming to watch will see that first hand on September 17.

"I challenged them on day one of camp to be their very best in everything they do - they've done that.

"Win, lose or draw I'm proud of what they've done - it's a big thing to get out of your comfort zone and step between the ropes.

"I'm sure the Barbarians will be more than competitive come September 17."

Coach of the Vikings Steven Spark added:

"This has been a great concept and the Vikings have stepped up to the challenge.

"Each and everyone of them has been amazing to work with.

"It's been very rewarding to see how far they've come.

"I think we will unearth some hidden talent on September 17.

"I hope the barbarians are ready because the Vikings are coming for the trophy.

"There has been some good hearted banter in the gym which is great but at the end of the day like Corb said I'm just proud of my team and what they've achieved already.

"For many getting in the ring will tick off a bucket list item, for others it was about challenging themselves or setting a goal and reaching it.

"May the best team win."

The Barbarians team consists of Steven Glover (captain), Dean Arnold, Jess Conway, Sam Fitton, Aggie Akenson, Shaye Glisson and Andrew Cottier.

The Vikings are led by skipper Conor Swinton, Dylan Ebneter, Jamie McMIllan, Matt Haworth, Kate Ingram, Gabby Rayment and Fatty Schwerin.

"It's been a great experience so far," Barbarians Captain Steven Glover said.

"For me this was a good opportunity to get fit and this fight has given me a goal to work towards.

"The team spirit has been great, coach Corb has been brilliant to work with as well as everyone from Smithy's TGW Gym.

"We're looking forward to September 17 and hopefully lifting the cup.

Vikings Captain Conor Swinton added:

"It's been a great concept to be a part of.

"It's a whole new experience for all of us and a very rewarding experience.

"Coach Stevie has gone above and beyond to get us ready and share his knowledge.

"We're in good hands so here's hoping we can be victorious on September 17."

The match up will be as follows.

CONOR SWINTON (C) Vikings vs JESS CONWAY Barbarians
DYLAN EBNETER Vikings vs SAM FITTON Barbarians
JAMIE MCMILLAN Vikings vs STEVEN GLOVER (C) Barbarians
MATT HAWORTH Vikings vs ANDREW COTTIER Barbarians
KATE INGRAM Vikings vs AGGIE AKENSON Barbarians
GABBY RAYMENT Vikings vs SHAYE GLISSON Barbarians
FATTY SCHWERIN Vikings VS DEAN ARNOLD Barbarians

The first Barbarian Viking Cup will be a feature attraction on the TGW & Smithy present Super Sunday 1 on September 17 at Smithy's TGW Gym.

The card also features two pro bouts - Joel Stower vs Olef Olsen in a three round heavyweight contest and Chris Brackin vs Kyle Teer in a four round lightweight bout.

As well as a great amateur card headlined by some of the best up and coming talent in the State.

"It's a great mix of entertainment," Promoter Brendon Smith said.

"The Barbarian Viking Cup will be a great feature.

"The two coaches Stevie and Corb have done an amazing job.

"It's all been in good spirit but I can tell both boys desperately want to win the cup.

"Add in our two pro fights and our young amateur stars and super Sunday is set to be just that - a super afternoon."

TICKETS for TGW & Smithy Bring Super Sunday Series 1 on September 17 are for sale from Smithy's TGW Gym, Ring Side A $95, General area $35.
