BRENT RICE vs JAMES KATZ: AUSTRALIAN TITLE SHOWDOWN PhilBoxing.com Mon, 04 Sep 2017 ![]() TOOWOOMBA'S RISING BOXING STAR BRENT RICE IS READY to defend his Australian super featherweight title in Brisbane on September 9. The challenger - James Katz, is a familiar face. The duo squared off in Toowoomba in 2015 in a four round lightweight bout - Rice the victor by majority decision. Judges Cyril Cairns and Adrian Cairns scored the bout 39-37 while Adam Height judged it a 38-38 draw. At the time Rice was 1-0 and Katz 3-0. Since that bout Rice has moved to 6-0 and is the Australian super featherweight champion, Katz is now 4-2. "I'm very familiar with James Katz," Brent Rice said. "We've met in the amateurs and in the pros but in this bout the stakes have been raised - it's ten rounds and my Australian title is on the line. "I have a healthy respect for James Katz as a fighter, he's a worthy challenger and I give him the respect he deserves. "This is a real challenge for me. "I want to be a fighting champion, I take a lot of pride in this belt so I've left no stone unturned in my bid to keep it." The Rice vs Katz bout is one of the headline bouts on leading Brisbane promoter Angelo DiCarlo's Ace Boxing Promotions card 'Who Will Rise' at Mansfield Tavern. The bout has been promoted in conjunction with Rice's management TGW & Smithy's Promotions. "It's always a pleasure to work with Angelo DiCarlo and his team," Rice's Manager Brendon Smith said. "This is a great fight between two rising stars of our sport and it's for the greatest prize in domestic boxing. "Brent Rice is a great champion and now he's ready to go to Brisbane to show what everyone in Toowoomba already knows - he's one of the best up and comers in this country. "He's got a great team behind him with his father Bobby and Mark Wilson and he's had many rounds of sparring with a number of our boys in Smithy's TGW Gym. "We will have a big Toowoomba contingent heading to Brisbane to support Brent Rice." Brent's father and head trainer Bobby expects his son to rise to the challenge on September 9. "This a significant challenge there is no question about that," Bobby Rice said. "However from the amateurs right through to the pro's Brent has always proven the bigger the challenge the harder he works and the bigger the occasion he steps up his performance. "I believe this will be no different. "Brent needs to be at his best on September 9 and I'm confident he will be. "Even though we already hold a win over James Katz, we are paying no attention to that. "Brent is now a far better fighter than when he beat James two years ago and it's the same for James. "This is a ten round title fight, it's much different to a four rounder. "It's a great domestic match up and I believe if Brent fights to the best of his ability the result will take care of itself. "We've just concentrated on what we can control. "We've had a great camp both out West and in town, we've had some great sparring at Smithy's TGW Gym and some great sessions with Mark Wilson. "We now have to take what we've done in the training camp into the ring and that's what we intend on doing." *If you wish to join Brent Rice's support crew in Brisbane, Smithy's TGW Gym has tickets available. ![]() |
