Result from Germany: Martin Outpoints Onggocan
By Carlos Costa PhilBoxing.com Sun, 13 Aug 2017
In an exciting fast-paced non-title 10-round battle, undefeated German Flyweight "The Comet" Mirco Martin (10-0, 5 KO's) scored a hard-fought win by points over tough Filipino southpaw Robert "El Rapido" Onggocan Saturday (Aug 12) in Saarbr?cken, Germany.
However, Onggocan is still the reigning IBF Youth Flyweight Champion as his red-and-gold belt was not on the line.
The German Martin went down hard in the second chapter and almost couldn't make on his feet, though he managed to survive the Pinoy onslaught and the battle raged on till the sound of the last bell.
At times Martin resorted to play it dirty, as if a cage fighter. For instance, he pushed the Filipino in a neutral corner at end of round 9, with Onggocan getting his right leg out of the ropes in that action.
"The Comet" also did some head-locking to the taller Filipino during a not-cool action in round 10, though inexplicably no points were deducted by the German referee.
Onggocan suffered a cut in the 6th round as a result of an accidental head butt product of Martin's disorganized attack with head first, though the bleeding was effectively controlled by the Filipino's experienced corner.
The brave 21-year-old Onggocan (9-2, 5 KO's) born in Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte, is handled by head coach Dino Olivetti, 43, of Bi?an City, Laguna, head of the popular Olivetti Boxing Gym, while "The Comet" Mirco Martin, 25, is promoted by veteran man of boxing Michael Siegel of Baden Box Promotions.
Right after the battle, the Filipino coach Dino Olivetti posted via Facebook:
"Thank you German boxing for the experience that Robert (Onggocan) and me had. We are thankful for this unforgettable experience in boxing. Special thanks to the third man in the ring. I think you need to attend boxing referee seminars. God bless us all!"
