Santos Jr. Open Chess Championships at the Ampid 1, San Mateo, Rizal on Saturday. Simborio, a former five-time Zamboanga del Sur Champion who is currently based in Rodriguez, Rizal, tallied 5.5 points in the six-round 20-minutes rapid event which was organized by JRS Chess Club in close cooperation with JRS Power System and Trading en route the title. He beat Louie Salvador of Quezon City in the sixth and final round for the coveted plum. The former solo leader and undefeated Salvador, on the other hand, was stuck at five points and was dropped into a tie for second to fifth places that includes National Master Romeo Alcodia of Baras, Rizal, Marion Ilagan of San Mateo, Rizal and John Fajardo of Rodriguez, Rizal. In the three-minutes Blitz competion, Salvador escaped in a losing position against Ronron Demain of Quezon City in their championships match to capped the title. Salvador and Demain, both tallied perfect four points in four outings and force a tie breaker for the blitz chess title. Meanwhile, tournament director Anthony Avellaneda and chief arbiter Jed Abudanza, encouraged all young chess players to participate in the upcoming free chess clinic next Saturday at the Guitnang Bayan, San Mateo, Rizal. "We do this free chess tournament and chess clinic to promote chess in the grassroots level and to discover future chess champion and chess masters," said Cayetano "Jun" R.
